The easiest method of searching census records is through the internet. FamilySearch.org has some digitized census records online at no charge. Other sources are Ancestry.com or HeritageQuest.com (sometimes available through your local library and always available by paid subscription). If you cannot access either Ancestry.com or HeritageQuest.com, microfilms can still be used to search census records. Below are film number series at the National Archives:

While these are not census records, other lists containing names of people can be used as "alternative census" substitutes. Look for Tax Schedules and Land Company record books.
