McKinney McCleester/McLeester - My great great grandfather was Alexander McCleester. He was born in County Roscommon, Ireland in 1818. He came to America in 1847, and started a type foundry with Thomas Collins. It was known as the Collins-McLeester Foundry. I found a picture of their pin mark on the internet.
For many years the foundry was successful but Mr. Collins decided to withdraw from the firm and Alexander bought him out and continued for a number of years under his own name. He eventually was forced by the American Type Founders Co., which was taking over all the foundries, to sell his plant to them. After that he retired.
Alexander married twice. The first wife was Mary Neal McCleester and they had 8 children. After Mary died he married for the second time and his wife called herself Mrs. MacAllister. He had two sons by her, Alex and Robin. Alexander lived to be 82 years old when he died.
I have several original carbons of letters written by my grandfather, John Edward McLeester, between 1952 and 1953 inquiring of various sources concerning information about his grandparents. Also several original replies to same.
According to letter dated April 27, 1953 from The Hayes Mechanics Home, Alexander was born in Oct 1818, entered there on Feb. 14, 1900, and died there on Feb 9 1904. Census records affirm this, to whit, the 1900 Census: City of Philadelphia, Ward 34, vol.190, ED898, p.15, line 57; enum June 13, Hayes Mechanics Home, West Fairmont Park, total of 60 inmates. (Indexed as McLeaster) McLeester, Alexander, age 82, b Oct. 1818, Ireland, immigrated 1848, Naturalized No, here 52 years, married 20 years.

McMullen/MacMullen McQuade - I have many descendants of Bernard McQuade b. bef. 1795 in Ireland, looking for ancestors. Maupay - Daniel Maupay Sr., arriving in PA from Switzerland in 1820 and was a founder of the Phila. Horticultural Society. He was apparently married in Philadelphia to a wife named Ann ??. Daniel Sr. is on the 1850 Phila. census. He had children born between abt. 1824 & 1838, and was living next to his son Samuel. His son Daniel Jr. had moved to New Orleans by 1850. Medlar Meehan Mendenhall Merrick - William H. Merrick was a builder at 1515 Catharine Street in Philadelphia. He died 12/16/1927. Merritt - Starting with George Washington Merritt, born in 1829. He operated a sawmill located at 10th & Norris in Quakerstown (Philadelphia). Mervin/Merwein/Mehrwein/Merwine/Marewine - Philip Mervine lived in Germantown in 1744-45 and then moved to Roxborough around 1749. Mesz Mettinger Metz Mildenberg Miller Mitnick - Harry. Believe wife's name was Dora. Immigrated from Russia to Woodbine, NJ. in about 1900. Harry later married again - to Hanna (Anna?) Alexenberg of Woodbine. Harry had 3 children -- Rose, Jacob, Minnie (May), non born in U.S. Minnie (May?) Mitnick married Samuel Casten. All information appreciated. Oct 1854 PA living in Philadelphia. Great grandfather Henry left CT when his 1st wife died and the family never heard from him again. Until the 1900 census was released, where he ended up was a family mystery. Newman - Anna Gertrude Wentz Newman born in Philadelphia PA, 03/10/1870. Nicastro Nicholson - Culbert Nicholson was in Philadelphia PA in 1735; married Jennet Candor 1735; shows up in 1750 tax rolls near a MCNICKLE family. Moved to Mecklenburg NC by 1767. Nixon Nolley - I am looking for any information on a Winnie Nolley, born in 1897 in Rock Store, Brunswick Co, VA. He was registered in the army in 1917 and there is no information on him since that time. His residence around 1917 was in Philadelphia, Pa. He also was stationed at Fort Meade, MD around 1918. It isn't clear whether the father emigrated with his children, or whether they emigrated separately. Given their ages at the stated year of emigration (as recorded in the Heilbronn parish family register), most likely they left with the father. Port of embarkation and port of arrival currently unknown. On the 6 January 1836, Ludwig married Catharina Haus in Philadelphia. No additional records of Ludwig Rieleder in the USA have yet been found. Any information on Ludwig or his family would be appreciated. He served on the Dakotah and the North Carolina as a "landsman". After being discharged he married and had twin girls in 1865. He first wife Elizabeth Schaffer died in 1868. He remarried Bridget Finnegan November 5th 1878 and had seven children. Three didn't make it past the age of 19. William born Jan 7th 1886 was my grandfather. He was a painter for a short time then joined the Philadelphia Police Force. He was one hell of a cop! He married Agnes Hunt and had two boys and one girl. James J. was my dad. He was born July 14th, 1916. He signed up just like his grandfather. This time it was the US Army. He called a tank home for the entire war. He was discharged and married Dorothy Galloway. They had three boys. Two of which joined the Phila police force and have since retired. I am the last of the three. Born in 1965 I'm now looking for as much info as I can find! The nice part is everyone in the tree has never strayed from Philadelphia! Whalen - (my mothers maiden name) Her father (Gerald) White Whitman Wilk - I am researching my father's mother; however, her mother remarried, so I don't know her maiden/birth surname. The information I have is: Julia (or Juliana)Rose Wilk born in Philadelphia on Jan 1st, 1904 or 1905. (But this is her mother, Sophia's, second marriage surname.) Sophia and my great-great grandfather were from Poland. Unfortunately, I waited too long to begin this research and my grandmother passed Jan 16, 1990 in Indianapolis, IN.
According to the 1930 US Census, she lived on Conrad St with my grandfather, Edward W. Oliver and my father Edward R. Oliver. Edward W. Oliver worked at the Hosiery Mill on Fulton St. I believe Sophia married Michael Wilk and took up residence in Brooklyn, NY.
What I am trying to find: birth records, marriage records, maiden names, immigration information for Sophia and her first husband, living family!!! Any information is welcome. James was working with John in an unknown business whose prospects were good for the next year, and which employed emancipated slaves.
John, with a young family for whom a box of dresses and books had been sent, was dead by 31 December 1839 in BPWC Illinois. Winter - Joseph William Winter (1787-185?) and his wife, Catharine (possibly Seidel or Bower), their son Dr. George Richner Winter and his wife Christiana Warner lived at 144 N. 12th Street in 1839. Moved to Gladwyne when the Reading Terminal was built there, about 1842. Birthdates for Joseph Winter's parents are 1753-1764, and for his grandparents 173?-1741. Searching for documentation of this family's arrival in America. Wisser Witsil Wood Woods Woodside - I’m looking for information on William Dickey, born about 1833 in Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. He later immigrated to U.S., reportedly as a youth. On 20 October, 1864 he married Eliza McKinley in Philadelphia, PA. He served in the Civil War with the 214th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. In 1865 he joined his brother Thomas in Mercer County, IL. Five years later, in 1870, he moved to Dixon County, Nebraska, and homesteaded near where Eliza’s family had settled. William’s siblings were identified in a letter by a great aunt as follows:

Mary A. Young born April 3, 1827 (Donegal) came to Philly aboard the Eben-Preble arriving June 24, 1845. Jasper and Mary married and had 6 children Jasper Jr., Samuel, Samuel, George, Annie E. and finally by great grandfather Joseph F. Young. Joseph Married Julia Scheidt in 1887 and had 8 children, only 1 surviving into adulthood, my grandfather William who married Emma Rex.
