Upper Middletown United Methodist Cemetery - Menallen Twp.

Compiled from records by Jane McCann Walsh and E. M. Whetsel


After lamenting for a number of years that no accurate record of this cemetery existed, in the summer of 2002, we undertook the task of cleaning, reading, re-reading and photographing each headstone in the cemetery. Additionally, obituaries, County Death Records and a few remaining fragments of church records were used to compile, what we believe to be, the  only accurate recording of this historic cemetery.

 

The earliest burial that can be documented by a headstone that is still standing is that of Zechariah Johnson, September 29, 1833. However, the church, and probably the cemetery, was in existence as early as 1784, known as the Methodist Episcopal Meeting House.

 

In 1835, the land on which the church and cemetery stood, was part of a 6+ acre plot owned by Daniel and Susan Jordan Whetsel. Daniel and Susan Whetsel sold the land that year. However, the land on which the church and cemetery stood, as well as an access road to the plot, was specifically excluded from the sale. No record exists in the Fayette County Courthouse that indicates that ownership of the church and cemetery was ever transferred to the Methodist (Episcopal) Church.

Directions: Drive north on Rt. 51 from its intersection with Rt. 119 approximately four miles to a traffic light. Turn left at the light, drive about 1/4 mile, turn right onto Old Rt. 51. Drive a short distance and the cemetery is on the right.
