1. Jacob POTTER.1 Born  between 1802 & 1804 in New York.2,3,1 Was on the Census for Damascus Twp, Wayne County, PA in 1850.2 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1870.4 Died on 3 Jul 1879 in Wayne County, PA.3,5,1 Buried in Conklin Hill Cemetery, Wayne County, PA.1 Occupation: blacksmith & farmer.1,6

  The AIS Mortality Index indicates that Jacob was born in 1804.  AIS Mortality Index states that he died in Feb 1879.  3   Notes left by the late Elizabeth Potter Pazel says that he was born in 1805 in New York.  Notes from Elizabeth Potter Pazel, Jacob's great granddaughter, say that Jacob died 3 July 1879.1  1850 Census says that he is 47, which would indicate  birth year of 1802.  1850 Census shows him with children by 1st & 2d wives, but without a wife.  Also living in the household in 1850 census is Caroline Willson, aged 30, born in PA.2  He has not been located in the 1860 Census.7  1870 Census says that he is 65, which would indicate a birth year of 1804.4  He purchased 30 acres in 1833 that was described as part of the Manor of Damascus, from Isaac Brown, Berlin Township, Wayne County, PA.  No deed recorded, but mortgage recorded in the sum of $500.00 in Book #2, Page 59 and was satisfied on 25 May 1835.  The mortgage stated that he was from Lumberland, Sullivan County, NY.  The purchase of another 66 acres from John Keesler for $450.00 was recorded in Deed Book #11, Page 197, Wayne County Courthouse, Honesdale, PA,  in July 1839.  Another 86 acres were purchased in May 1851 from Nicholas Conklin for $232.67 and recorded in Deed Book #20, Page 557.  The original grant of this land was to Mr. Shields and his wife, Hannah.  Most of Jacob's property was lost in a sheriff's sale, but he left an estate probated in the Wayne County Court in 1879, and inventoried at $135.00.  David Sutliff was named executor.  Jacob's third wife, Ruth Jane Little Polick preceded him in death.    Notes from the late Elizabeth Potter Pazel say that he is buried in Conklin Hill Cemetery, but in August 2001, great great granddaughter, Carol Marie Potter Meadows, observed no stone with his name.1  

1840 Census for Lumberland, Sullivan County, NY shows Jacob Potter living next door to Henry Hendrickson and Elias Calkins.8

  In the 1880 Census for Joel Potter, it indicates that his mother was born in PA.9

  He third married Ruth Jane LITTLE1, daughter of LITTLE, in 1856.1,6 Born in 1822 in NY.1,4 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1850.2 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1870.4 Died on 3 Jul 1879.6 Buried in Conklin Hill Cemetery, Conklin Hill, Wayne County, PA.6

  1850 Census says that her birthplace is unknown.  In the 1850 Census, she is living with a John and Eliza Barnes and family with an 11-month-old daughter Ann Pollock and an 8-year-old daughter Elmira Pollock.2  1870 Census shows a William Polick, aged 79, living in the household.4

  1850 Census shows she and her husband living with her father and half siblings.2   She may have died with the birth of George, since her death date and his birth date coincide.

  She married John H. WHEELER6, in 1849.2 Born in 1820 in NY.2 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1850.2 Was on the Census for Manchester Township, Wayne County, PA in 1870.4 Was on the Census for Palmyra Township, Wayne County, PA in 1880.9 Occupation: Laborer.4

  1850 Census shows him living in the household of Jacob Potter, his father-in-law.2  1880 Census on LDS website says that his father was born in CT and his mother was born in NY.9

  The death record recorded at Wayne County Courthouse, Honesdale, Wayne County, PA shows the year of death as 1899.  Death record also says that he was born in Ten Mile River with no state. I have been told that Ten Mile River is located in Sullivan County, NY.12   Tombstone at Pine Mill Cemetery says the death year was 1898.11  1850 Census shows him living with only his father and siblings, but no mother.  1850 Census says that he was born in NY.2  Has not been located in the 1860 Census.7  1870 Census says that he was born in PA.4 1880 Census says that he was born in PA and his father was born in NY and his mother was born in PA.9

  He married Adaleen (Adeline) KEESLER10,1, daughter of Charles D. KEESLER & Sarah A.   In the 1880 Census, Joel and Adeline Potter are living next door to Henry and Margaret Boults.  The 1880 Census says that both of her parents were born in PA.  The 1880 Census listed a daughter, Mary that was not included in the notes from Elizabeth Potter Pazel.  Maybe Mary was a granddaughter?9     1900 Census says that Adeline was a widow.  She was living with her widowed mother in Dreher Township, Wayne County, PA.  The 1900 Census says that she gave birth to 11 children and that 9 were still living.  The census also says that both her parents were born in PA.13  After Joel's death and the death of Margaret Potter Boults, she married Henry Boults.1  Living with Son Harry in the 1910 Census with name as Adeline Bolts.14  In the 1920 Census, she is living with her daughter, Bernice and her husband William Stevenson.  Her surname is shown as BOLTS.15

  1850 Census shows that she was born in NY.  1850 Census says that she is 8, which would indicate a birth year of 1841.2  She has not been located in the 1860 Census.7  1870 Census says that she was born in PA.  1870 Census says that she is 26, which would indicate a birth year of 1843.4  1880 Census says that she is 36, which would indicate a birth year of 1843.9

  She married Henry  (BOLES)(BOLTS) BOULTS1,2, son of Cornelius (BOLES)(BOLTS) BOULTS & Caroline ????.1 Born in 1837 in PA.2 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1850.2 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1870.4 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1880.9 Died before 23 Aug 1919.16 Occupation: Farmer.4

 

After Margaret's death and Joel Potter's death, he married Adeline Keesler Potter.1 1910 Census does not show him living with Adeline, either they were not together or he was deceased.14

  1850 Census shows him living with his father and siblings, but no mother.2  He had not been located in the 1860 Census.7  1880 Census says that he is 37, which would indicate a birth year of 1842.  Census says that both parents were born in PA.  Also living in the household is Norman Gaston, aged 25.9  1900 Census says that he was born in Oct 1843 in PA.  1900 Census says that both parents were born in PA.13

  Jane Conklin was a sister to Nicholas Conklin who married Malvenia Potter.1  1900 Census says that both parents were born in PA.  1900 Census says that she gave birth to 4 children who were still living.13  1920 Census shows her living with Ezra M. Gasten who is 51 and his wife Jennie who is also 51.  Also in the household is a male Conklin who is single and 49 years old, first name and relationship are unreadable and a female Gasten who is 27 and single, first name unreadable and relationship looks like daughter.  It says she is his mother.  She is shown as 76 years old which means that she was born in 1843.151880 Census says that she is 37 which would indicate a birth year of 1842.  Census says that both her parents were born in PA.9

  Nicholas Conklin was a brother to Jane Conklin who married David Potter.1  1870 Census says that he is 33 which means that he was born in 1836 or 1837.4  1870 Census shows his nephew, William Gaston, aged 14, born in PA, living in the household.4  1880 Census says that both parents were born in PA.9  1910 Census says that he is 73, which would indicate a birth year of 1826.  1910 Census shows grandson, Roscoe Conklin Tyler (Census actually says Oscar) living in the household.14

  1880 Census says that both parents were born in PA.  1880 Census says that she is 25 which would indicate a birth year of 1854.9  1910 Census says that she is 58, which would indicate a birth year of 1851.14

  She married Gordon N. (Gird) (BUCHER) (BORCHER) BOUCHER1,6,14, son of William (BUCHER) (BORCHER) BOUCHER & Harriet ????,  before 1880 Census.1,9 Born in 1847 in PA.2 Was on the Census for Berlin Township, Wayne County, PA in 1850.2 Was on the Census for Oregon Township, Wayne County, PA in 1860.7 Was on the Census for Oregon Township, Wayne County, PA in 1870.4 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1880.9 Was on the Census for Potter County, PA in 1910.14 Died in Potter County, PA.6

  In 1870 Census, he is living in the household of Joseph C. Boyd.4  1880 Census says that he is 31, which would indicate a birth year of 1848.  1880 Census says that both parents were born in England.9  In the 1910 Census for Wayne County, PA there is a William Boucher, aged 79 born in PA living with his niece Gladys Conklin, aged 19 born in PA.  Could possibly be Gird Boucher's father.14   1910 Census says that he is 62, which would indicate a birth year of 1847.14  Soon after their marriage they moved to Potter County, PA (Oral history from Richard Wood's aunt who stated Gird being in Potter county was the reason many of Richardâs line (GASTON) went to Potter County. Norman died in Potter County, PA.  I do not have any children listed for Gird and Mary L.6

  Lived in Galeton, PA with a lady named Mary.1  Living with Gordon Boucher and his sister Mary in 1880 Census.9  1910 Census shows him living with brother-in-law, Gordon Boucher and his sister Mary Potter Boucher.  1910 Census says that he is 50, which would indicate a birth year of 1859.14  1920 Census says that he is 60, which would indicate a birth year of 1859.  1920 Census shows him living with a woman named, Mary Rose.15

  Elizabeth Potter Pazel's notes say that he died in 1930 at age 75 and in another place, it says 20 Feb 1935.1  1870 Census says that he is 13 years old, which would indicate a birth year of 1856.4  1880 Census says that he is 23, which would indicate a birth year of 1856.  1880 Census shows him living in the household of Gordon Boucher and his sister Mary.9  1920 Census says that he is 62, which would indicate a birth year of 1857.  1920 Census shows him as single living in the household of Hiram Conklin.  1920 Census also shows an aunt of Hiram Conklin, Malvenia Potter, a widow aged 74, living in the household.15

Mathilda Jane (Jenny) POTTER.1 Born in Aug 1864 in PA.15,14,13 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1870.4 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1880.9 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1910.14,19 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1920.15 Died in 1927.20

 

1880 Census shows her name as Jane.  1880 Census shows her as single living with Gordon Boucher and her sister Mary.9  1900 Census says that she gave birth to 4 children and 4 children were still living.13  1910 & 1920 Census shows her name as Jennie.1514  1920 Census says that both of her parents were born in NY.15

 

She married Norman A. GASTON1,15, son of John R. GASTON & Sarah T. CONKLIN,  after 1880 Census.1,9 Born in Mar 1855 in PA.15,14,13 Was on the Census for Pleasant Mount, Wayne County, PA in 1870.4 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1880.9 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1900.13 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1910.14,19 Was on the Census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, PA in 1920.   1880 Census shows him as single living in the household of  David Lawrence Potter. 1880 Census says that his father was born in NY and his mother was born in PA.9  1910 Census says that he is 55, which would indicate a birth year of 1854.  There is one non-relative in household.14  1920 Census shows a William R. Vickers, aged 14, living in the household.  Relationship looks like it says adopted(?).  1920 Census says that Norman is 64, which would indicate a birth year of 1855.15  1930 Census says that father was born in PA and mother was born in NY.  He is a widower in the 1930 Census.21

  Her husband in the 1880 Census on the LDS website is shown as William A. Gillow, aged 26.  Her name is spelled as Elinda.  A person named Sally Hurlburt, aged 80 is also living in the household.9  1900 Census says that she gave birth to seven children and 5 were living.13

  1870 Census says that he was 14, which would indicte a birth year of 18554  1880 Census shows his name as William A. Gillow.9  Living in the household in the 1910 Census besides wife and children were SIL Clara Potter and Nephew Elwood Stalker, aged 17, born in PA.14  In the 1920 Census Elwood Stalker with his wife, Stella and daughter, Elmora aged 1 1/2, is living next door to Albert Gillow.   The 1920 Census says that he is 65, which would indicate a birth year of 1854.15   1930 Census shows sister-in-law, Clara Potter, aged 68, living in the household.21

  16. Sally Jane POTTER. Born on 19 Sep 1858. Died on 15 Oct 1861.  She is not in the 1870 Census with the family.4

E. Church.  Funeral services were conducted from said church Friday afternoon at two o'clock; burial in the local cemetery.  The twins are being cared for by Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Coddington.

W. Atlee Teeple, 70, Equinunk, died on Sunday, August 13, 1967, in Callicoon NY Hospital.  His two wives, Ada Lester and Lenza Dailey, preceded him in death.  Born in Equinunk on April 11, 1897, he was the son of the late Henry and Maude Layton Teeple.  He operated a general store in Equinunk for a number of years.  Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. George White (Norma); two sons. Orvis and Henry, all of Equinunk; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 pm in the Pine Mill Methodist Church with the Rev. Young Cho officiating.  Interment in Pine Mill Cemetery.  Friends may call at the home on Monday evening and Tuesday until funeral time.  Arrangements by Tegeler Funeral Home, Damascus.

In Manchester Twp. the second oldest cemetery is near the Union Church the property for this church and cemetery was donated by settler Christopher Teeple.  p.255  Manchester Twp. Barbara Teeple was elected in the capacity of one of the township auditor  p. 254 The post office is in Equinunk, The two rural routes are staffed by Granville Teeple and John Zona. Orvis Teeple, Granville's father, brings the mail from the Honesdale distribution center.22

  He was bathing in the Delaware River with a number of other people.  He was not a swimmer and had walked in over his head.  Roy Tarbaux of Binghamton, NY, among the bathers in Lordville just for the day, noticed Potter's predicament, and as he was sinking for the third time, rescued him and pulled him to shore.  Potter was taken to his home in Lordville and Dr. Frisbie of Equinunk, PA was summoned.  For a time the unfortunate man showed signs of recovery, but he died about two hours later.  He had lived in Equinunk, Wayne County, PA and Binghamton, Broome County, NY before relocating to Lordville, NY six weeks before he drowned.16

Wilbur Branning - Funeral services for Wilbur Branning, 67, of Hancock, NY, who died Monday, Aug.9m 1971 in Read Memorial Hospital, Hancock, were held Thursday, Aug. 12 at 11 am from the Wilbur I Biedekapp Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Rave, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Equinunk, PA officiating. Burial was in Pine Mill Cemetery, Pine Mill, PA.

Mr. Branning's death followed a long illness, which required his being hospitalized for several weeks both at Hancock and in Binghamton, NY.

Mr. Branning, a stonemason and quarry-man by trade, was born on Nov.4, 1903 in Honesdale, PA, a son of the late Emory and Anna (Swendsen) Branning. He attended school in Honesdale but had lived most of his adult life in the Hancock, NY area. At Scranton, PA April 15, 1933 he was united in marriage with Miss Mildred Wood, who survives. Also surviving is a son, James C. Branning at home, a student at Hancock Central School. Other survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Jolly, Utica; Mrs. Claudine VanFleet, Kirkwood, and Mrs. Ann Morell, Union, NJ; one brother, Ross Branning of Hancock, NY, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.22
