Francis May is my GGG Grandfather. He was
born on 5 June 1830 and died on 24 Apr 1892. He appears to have lived his entire life in Upper
Turkeyfoot Township, Somerset County, PA. He initially enlisted on 12 Nov 1861 with Company
H of the 85th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers (unsure of enlisted length and service record
for this enlistment). Enlisted for a second time with Company G of the 148th Regiment of Pennsylvania
Volunteers on 1 Sep 1863 for a period of three years. Lost right arm below elbow due to gunshot
wound received in battle (amputated in the field on the day of battle). Pension file records
mention battle occurred on 31 March 1865 near Hatchers Run, VA ("Battle of South Side RR,
VA" or "Battle of Adams Run, VA"; apparently prior to engagement at White Oak Road), which
was part of the Appomattox Campaign, just days prior to Lee's surrender on 9 Apr 1865 at Appomattox
Courthouse. At the time, he was serving as a Private with Company G of the 148th Regiment
of Pennsylvania Volunteers. He may have transferred to Company B, 53d Regiment of the Pennsylvania
Volunteers on 1 Jun 1865 (no confirmation of this note). He was honorably discharged on 28
Jun 1865 due to the wound. If you look closely at the photo, you can see that the right arm
appears "fake" -- because it is! I found this photo in July 2002 while searching through my
grandmother's old boxes. It is a tin-type photo, and the image was reversed (the number on
his hat was backwards, so that gave it away). |

William F. MORRISON and Virginia Lucinda LICHTENBERGER
Nebraska, circa 1870. Notes: This photo hung in the home of Josiah Morrison and Gertrude Morrison
of Callaway, Nebraska. I believe it is Josiah's parents: William F. MORRISON and Virginia
Lucinda LICHTENBERGER, formerly of Somerset Twp., Somerset county, Pennsylvania, who migrated
to Bradshaw, York, Nebraska around 1860. The photo was probably taken around 1870. I would
like to find someone who has the original photo and verify the identification of it. |
