The spelling of the last name in the 1850 Paint Census was a phonetic spelling of Schlegel (Slagle) The names listed in family #102 are my ancestors, here is some information on the family.Paint Twp. 1850 Census, page 2
Augustus Schlegel, his wife Christine Lisabeth Franke and their three children; Frederick K (not listed in the 1850 census), Christian (my GG GF), and Teresa immigrated to the Hooversville area in 1846 from Prussia. I have not been able to determine why they chose to settle in the Hooversville area, they must of had relatives or friends in this area.
I am attaching a link to the Augustus Schlegel family group sheets. Most of the names are Somerset County names from adjacent townships. Almost all of the Slagles in the northern Somerset and southern Cambria Counties (Greater Johnstown area) are descendants of this family. The southern Somerset County Slagles are of a different family group with no known connections.
