The son of James and Hannah (Kelly) Coll, William was born and raised in McAdoo, PA where he graduated from high school in 1934. He was killed in action on Aug. 1, 1943, at Ploesti, Romania, during one of the most famous air-to-ground battles of WWII. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal and Oak Leaf cluster
