Bridget Barrett and Aunt Maggie The story of my great great grandmother Bridget Barrett(maternal) is that when her husband died, she was left with three teen aged children to raise. She opened a boarding house. By the time Bridget died she owned the boarding house and two more houses on the same street as well as two vacant lots. She left one house to each of her children. One of the children was my great aunt Maggie. As a child I; along with my mother, grandmother and siblings lived with aunt Maggie in the house that was once a boarding house. Aunt Maggie was tall and thin. She walked with her back straight ("ladies DO NOT slouch"). Maggie's hair was snow white and she wore it piled on top of her head. I never say Maggie wear anything other than a long black dress or a skirt that reached to the floor. Maggie spent most of her time in her bedroom. It was the largest bedroom and had a view of the street and side yard. Maggie was mysterious. She would "invite" us into her bedroom occasionally. She had great things in her room. In a cedar chest at the foot of her bed there were wonderful quilts that she and her mother had made. She had a beautiful cherry bedroom set with a 4 poster bed.Instead of having pillows Maggie had a "bolster". It was one long pillow that reached from one side of the bed to the other. On each post of the bed was hanging a pair of rosary beads. Maggie said 4 rosaries each night . One for her mother, one for her dead husband, one for her father and one for herself. On the inside of the door frame hung a holy water font and you HAD to bless yourself each time you walked into or out of Maggie's room. A tall wardrobe stood against one wall and piled on top of it were several hat boxes. On top of Maggie's dresser was a beautiful old Silver backed Comb/brush and button hook. She also had several beautiful hat pins in a pin cushion.
