Other things we did with a coal



The "mangle" iron.  My mom could run through the dampened wash like crazy 

with that thing.  We kids were fascinated, but not allowed near when she was 

using it.



Racing on to someone's porch to watch the coal delivery....coal going down 

the chute, and into the bin...  (That was entertainment for all us kids on 

the block, back in the late 40s & 50s.)



Ashes from the furnaces and coal stoves were used all over town during the 

winter.  Even with that and chains, sometimes the cars could not get up some 

of Frackville streets, like Centre (from Oak to Frack).



My grandmother cooked with coal too.  What she turned out...  just 

scrumptious!
