THE NEW COUNTY JAIL.
FINE SUBSTANTIAL BUILDING ERECTED ON SITE OF OLD JAIL.

Costs About $28,000 and Is a Complete Modern Prison and Office and Residence for Sheriff.

We here present a picture of the new county jail, nearing completion at New Bloomfield.
It is a fine, substantial building, and will serve the purpose for which it has been erected for many years.  Its total cost will be about $28,000.
It will include the jail proper and the sheriff's office and residence.  The jail is build of light-colored stone, with Hummelstown brown stone trimmings, the residence portion being of pressed brick.  The latter has a frontage of 36 feet and a depth of 35-1/2 feet.  There is a transverse wing extending 9-1/2 feet on each side of the residence portion and 18 feet deep.  Back of this is the jail, 13 feet wide and 35-1/2 feet deep.
The cellar contains a heating plant, laundry, etc.
The first floor contains six cells in the center flanked on either side by a prisoners' corridor and a guard's corridor, a large bath and wash room, a turnkey's room, dining room, kitchen and numerous and convenient pantries and closets.  The second floor contains a second tier of cells and corresponding corridors, the female ward, hospital, four bedrooms, hall and closets; and the third floor contains a hall and three bed rooms over the residence portion.
In the jail proper the first and second floors are made of iron and cement, with a board floor laid on top.  The cells are built of the finest Bessemer steel and the doors are so arranged that by throwing a lever all the doors on that tier may be unlocked, or any single door may be unlocked by the use of a key.  There are toilet and bath rooms in both jail and residence, The building is heated by steam and lighted by electricity.  The entire building is roofed with slate.

2 August 1905; Advocate-

The Iron cells in the county jail have been treated to a coat of black paint.
