Jo Ann Patterson Baxley
This is from material I copied from "Egle’s Notes and Queries" a long
time ago and recently came across. The first mentioned Hannah Boyd is
my g-g-g-grandmother.
The ancestor of this family came from Ireland in 1732, and settled in
Londonderry Twp, Chester Co., Pennsylvania. In 1733 he was appointed a
Justice of the Peace and in 1760 was chosen a member of the Assembly.
Late in life he removed to Oxford Twp., where he died April 17, 1767
aged 58. His wife died eleven days afterwards. Both are buried at Faggs
Manor. They left three sons and three daughters viz: Jane, John,
William, Jane, Mary, Hannah. Mary married George Boyd of another family
of the same name. Hannah married Matthew Boyd brother of George by whom
she had three children, Jane, Rebecca, and John. Her husband died from a
fall from his horse and she afterward became the third wife of Gen. William
Montgomery of Danville. Rebecca, her daughter, married Rev. John Boyd
Patterson of Danville and left nine children. Jane never married and
John died unmarried at the age of twenty-three.
James Boyd the eldest son of William Boyd immigrant was born in
Chester Co., in 1749 and died Aug. 10,1821. His wife Mary died July 22,
1822 aged seventy five years, James Boyd served in the Revolution and
participated in several battles. He was a member of the Assembly
during the years 1779,1780,1782,1790, and 1791; also of the
constitutional convention of 1790 and an associate Judge from Nov 1,
1793 until his death. Judge Boyd was a devout member of the Presbyterian
Church and served forty years as a ruling elder in Faggs Manor Church.
John Boyd second son of Judge Boyd married December 18, 1782 Mary
Cowan of Chester County. He was appointed Brigadier General of First
Brigade , Third Division, State Militia; serving many years in the
legislature from Chester Co., and was a ruling elder in the Presbyterian
Church of Fagg's Manor for twenty years. The date of his death has not
come down to us. His Children were:
	i. Jane; m. Alexander Montgomery of Danville by his first wife
	ii. Joseph; m. Margaret Steel
	iii. William; m. Eliza Steel
	iv.	James; d. unm.
	v.	John-Cowan;b1793;d.Aug.18,1849
	vi.	Mary;m. David Whitehill
	vii.	Hannah-Eliza; never married
John C. Boyd youngest son of General Boyd married Hannah , daughter
of Gen. Daniel Montgomery of Danville, May 18, 1820 and moved to
Danville soon afterwards. He opened a store in the building where his
father-in-law had carried on the same business. This business he
conducted quite successfully until 1824, when he removed to a farm , on
the south side of the river, two miles above Danville. This farm was
given to Mrs. Boyd by her father General Montgomery, as her marriage
portion, and it came to be known as the "Boyd Farm." Here he engaged
extensively in farming . Much land was purchased until the farm
contained 900 acres. He built a fine mansion, a grist mill and was
active in making other improvements.

Not contented to farming and milling, Mr. Boyd became interested in the
Pottsville and Danville railroad company, and the Susquehanna canal, in
both of which he was a corporate member. Having purchased a tract of
land , he laid out the town of Shamokin, organized a company erected a
furnace, furnishing a large share of the capital himself. Business
boomed.
The railroad was completed from Pottsville to Shamokin. In April, 1835,
the act of chartering the Susquehanna canal company was passed, and he
became one of the commissioners and leading spirit in the enterprise.
From 1838 to 1841 the iron business became very active. When
his furnace was finished the event was celebrated at Shamokin by a
banquet. That night the building took fire and burned down. Undaunted
by this misfortune, he started to rebuild the furnace, largely out of
his own means. In the meantime the Iron business declined. He succeeded
in rebuilding the furnace, but as there was no demand for iron, the
business languished, and finally operations ceased. This is the
finishing stroke to his great efforts. His fortune was swept away. But
being endowed with great pluck, he vigorously set about retrieving it ,
and for nine years he struggled with untiring energy, and just as he
came to the point where he could see relief he was struck with dysentery
and died August 18, 1849, at the age of fifty six years.
John C. Boyd and Hannah Montgomery his wife left seven children
viz:
	i. Mary L.; m. William Neal
	ii. Daniel-Montgomery.
	iii. Hannah-Eliza;d. unm
	iv. James
	v. J. Alexander
	vi. Christiana
	vii. Joseph C.
I have been to Fagg’s Manor Church and Graveyard and to Upper Octorara
Church and Graveyard and found the records for those who are buried
there. The church people were very helpful and the Fagg’s Manor
secretary gave me a small history of that church and I would share info.
I also have a small history of Upper Octorara Church and will share
info.

Hannah Boyd Boyd later married William Montgomery and lived for a time
in Montour County, PA. There is a Hannah Montgomery buried in the
Warrior Run Cemetery according to a list and says this Hannah died in
1804. I am looking for the death/obit/burial record of the particular
Hannah Boyd Montgomery and would like any assistance anyone can give.
Thanks.

Patterson
I have received information from the Presbyterian Historical Society about Rev. John Boyd Patterson. He was pastor for forty-four years of the Derry Presbyterian Church. They do not have other information that can be accessed. Is there still a church with this name? Has any church history ever been written? Rev. Patterson had nine children who lived to adulthood and I learned from this informtion that he never was paid over $400 per year, but was able to see that three of his sons were provided college educations and comfortable homes for the other children. Is there an area directory that covers the time between 1800 and 1843 when he died?

Morrison
Looking for any information on Mary Elizabeth Morrison b. Jan. 15, 1845 in Danville, PA. Her father died when she was young and her mother remarried. Her father's last name was Morrison, we do not know his first. He was a minister, Episcopal. Her mother's name was Theodosa.
A birth certificate for Mary Elizabeth would give his name and maybe her maiden name. A marrage certificate for Morrison about 1840 to 1844? Anything! Baptism record?
She also wrote to a man who we think was an uncle. His last name was Shoop and I think his first initial looks like a G. Any SHOOP referance might give us a clue.

Is there a historical society in Montour Co. I could contact to look this one up for me?
