United Presbyterian Church

A United Presbyterian church, was organized in New Vernon, about the time of the union which formed that denomination throughout the county, and the first pastor in the village was Rev. James Burrows. In 1858, a house was commenced by the society on land purchased of James McCormick, but before its completion, it was burned down. A new one was then commenced upon the same foundation, in 1862, and was completed in 1865, and Rev. J. A. Bailey was employed as the first pastor. The present pastor is Rev. W. R. Bruce, who preaches there one-third of his time. The building is the best of the kind in the township, is well-proportioned with a tall and beautiful spire, and presents a fine appearance in every respect. Its membership is about forty-eight.
