Mr. William Emery died
at his home , Delaware twp. on Sabbath, March 11,, 1883. He was born in
Centre county, in April 1792. About the year 1839, he removed to
Delaware twp., Mercer county, where he lived until his death. At the
time of his removal to Mercer county, her present fertile fields were
covered with a vast unbroken forest, and like other early settlers, he
was compelled to begin the laborious task of heaving down the huge oaks
to build himself a home and clear the land for cultivation. In those
days wild game was very plenty, and the early pioneers depended mostly
on supplying themselves with meat from this source, and it was no
uncommon occurrence for him to kill a deer or wolf, and occasionally a
bear, with his old flint lock rifle.
Mr. Emery was a man
eminently fitted to live in those times and undergo their hardships,
being p possessed of a strong arm, a stout heart, and a vigorous
constitution. He was a man who, during a long and useful life, had won
the respect and esteem of all with whom he associated. He was married
in 1828 to Mrs. Mary Davis, who died in 1870. He leaves two sons and
two daughters to mourn their loss. J. D. E.
