Margaret Evans Clifford

1807 - 1905

ALMOST REACHED CENTURY MARK

Death of Mrs. Margaret Clifford, of Wheatland, at the age of 98 years.

Almost a centerian? and probably the oldest woman in the state, Mrs. Margaret Clifford, who was in her 98th year, died at 11 o'clock Sunday evening at the home of her son, John Clifford, proprietor of the Lee house at Wheatland. Up until about six weeks ago, Mrs. Clifford was able to be up and around but her strength failing gradually, she was compelled to take to her bed and the end came peacefully last night.

Mrs. Clifford was born in Monmouth, Gloucestershire, England, in 1807,but her people moved to London and there she spent the early part of herlife. Even to the last her memory of things and events of the long ago was perfect and she delighted to tell how she had witnessed the coronation festivities when in 1837 Queen Victoria was crowned. She was in London three years later when the queen was married to Prince Albert, of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Her maiden name was Margaret Evans."
