URIAH
S. CLARK. - - Proprietor of the Hotel Clark, in Jackson Center,
Uriah S. Clark traces his descent to one of the honored old families of
Mercer county. He is a grandson of Abraham Clark, who was among the
first to establish his home in this county, and during many years he
was one of its leading farmers. His son and the father of Uriah S. was
William Clark, born in 1807 in Jackson township, and he died on the
28th of July, 1875, after many years as a farmer and stock-raiser
there. He married Mary Ann Supplee, born March 24, 1827, in
Philadelphia, a daughter of Uriah and Margaret Supplee. Their union was
blessed by the birth of three children, the eldest of whom is Charles
M. Clark, a prominent agriculturist in Jackson township. He married
Mollie Lee, and their three children are William E., Harry and Jennie.
Uriah S. was the second child born to William and Mary Ann Clark, and
the third and youngest child died in infancy. William Clark in politics
affiliated with the Democratic party, and during tell years he served
as a justice of the peace in Jackson township and was during several
terms a school director. Both he and his wife were members of the
Cumberland Presbyterian church.

served an apprenticeship of three years at the carpenter’s trade after
completing his public school training. He has also followed farming and
is the owner of a small farm of thirty acres of fine land in Jackson
township. He also conducted a meat market at Jackson Center for twelve
years. He married, February 28, 1888. Ellen Hurley, born November 7,
1870, in Mercer county, a daughter of Thomas and Mary (Shannahan)
Hurley, both now deceased. They came to the United States from Ireland
and located in Mercer, Pennsylvania, where Thomas Hurley was identified
with railroad work. They were the parents of eleven children, of whom
six attained to years of maturity, namely: Edward, Minnie. Margaret,
Hattie, James, and Ellen. The last named became the wife of Mr. Clark
and they have had eight children: Mary Mabel, born October 13, 1889:
James LeRoy, May 18, 1891; John, March 21 1895; Ellen Edna, February
14, 1897; Elsie May, October 7, 1898; Hattie, October 5, 1900: Charles,
April 29, 1902; and Blanche Elizabeth, February 25, 1907. The politics
of Mr. Clark are Democratic, and he has served as a school director and
constable of Jackson township. He is a member of the fraternal order of
Foresters of America, Lodge No. 37.
