MOSES BEIL,
an engineer at Greenville, Mercer county. Pennsylvania, was born April
31, 1854. a son of John and Mary (Shoemaker) Beil, both now deceased.
The father owned and conducted a hotel at New Hamburg. Mercer county,
and when the son was about five years of age, the father and mother
both died within three weeks of one another, of typhoid fever which was
raging at that (late in the vicinity. Moses Beil was then reared by Ely
George, who married a cousin of Mr. Beil's father, a tinsmith by trade.
Moses was permitted to attend school until eighteen years of age, then
worked on a farm in Delaware township six years, when he went to
Greenville to learn the trade of a buggvsmith, remaining there three
years. In 1876 he engaged as fireman on the old Shenango Valley
Railroad (now the Bessemer) where he continued for eight years, when he
was promoted on merit to an engineer on the Erie Railroad and has been
in the employ of this company for twenty-four years. In political
views, Mr. Beil affiliates with the Republican party. He is a
consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He is also a
worthy member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
Mr.
Beil was married in 1875. to Jennie Jones, born March 24. 1853,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Jones. The issue by this marriage was:
Eva Ma, wife of Fred Hause, an engineer of the Bessemer Railroad, a son
of William Hause, farmer. Mrs. Hause has in her possession a Bible, an
heirloom in the Hause family (German), bearing the date of 1763. The
second daughter, Alice. is the wife of George Metcalf, a blacksmith of
Greenville; Walter married Mary Snyder, of Mercer, and they have two
children-Fred and Earl-the only grandchildren; Mabel, wife of Daniel
Phillips, of the Tube Mills at Greenville; Nelson Ely, a civil engineer
for the Bessemer Railroad at Greenville; and Archer Allen, deceased.
Mrs. Beil and her daughter. Mrs. Hause, are officers of the Ladies'
Auxiliary of the B. L. E. at Greenville. Mrs. Hause is also holding the
chief office in the Maccabees at Greenville, having held the same since
1906.
In conclusion it may be subjoined that the grandfather of
Mr. Beil, Peter Beil, farmer, was a native of Pennsylvania. and his
wife was Elizabeth Snyder. Also, that the brothers and sisters of Mr.
Beil were: Elmer, an engineer on the Bessemer Railroad, at Greenville;
Ely, deceased; Elizabeth, wife of James Haase, another employee of the
Bessemer road.
