ALBERT L. SHILLING
- - Occupying a foremost position among the honored and respected
residents of Wheatland is Albert L. Shilling. who was for many
years prominently identified with the agricultural progress of this
part of Mercer county, but is now living retired from active pursuits,
enjoying a well-earned leisure. A native-born citizen of Wheatland, his
birth occurred September 25, 1841, his parents being Henry
and Mary (Hann) Shilling.
Acquiring a good common school
education, Albert L. Shilling early obtained a practical knowledge of
the various branches of agriculture under the wise instructions of his
father, and after reaching man’s estate was for a number of years
successfully employed in tilling the soil. Using sound judgment in his
undertakings, he secured a fair share of this world’s goods, and during
the past eight years has lived retired, devoting his entire time and
attention to the care of his personal interests, being still the owner
of a fine farm, and having title to other real estate of value.
On
January 1, 1863. Mr. Shilling married Josephine, daughter of Alden
Woodward, of Hickory township, Mercer county, and of their union two
children, have been born, namely: Virgie and Mary Belle. Virgie has
been twice married. She married first William Laird, by whom she had
one child, Edna Laird, who was brought up by Mr. and Mrs. Shilling. She
married for her second husband George May, of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
Mary Belle is the wife of Prof. Thomas Kimes, who is superintendent of
schools at New Castle, Pennsylvania. Politically Mr. Shilling is an
uncompromising Democrat, and for more than twenty years had served as
school director.
