Two Killed In Traffic Mishaps In This County

Youth And Small Boy Victims Of Two Shocking Accidents
McKean County's 1937 highway traffic fatality toll was increased to six the latter part of last week when a youth and small boy were killed in two different accidents in a 24-hour period. Victims were: Richard Larson, 18, of Two Mile road, near Port Allegany. David Wiles, 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard 'Wiles, of Bullis Mills.

Port Allegany, April 30: Richard Larson, 18, of the Two Mile road, near Port Allegany, was instantly killed last night about 7:30 o'clock two miles west of Eldred junction on the Duke Center-Eldred road when the motorcycle he was riding alone crashed head-on with a coupe driven by Joseph Mortland, 35, of Dallas City. He suffered a fractured skull and broken left leg.  The young man, proceeding towards Duke Center, attempted to pass a car driven by E. L. Ford, of Port Allegany. The motorcycle grazed the left rear fender of the Port Allegany man's car just before the impact with the car proceeding in the opposite direction. Mortland received a cut on one hand from glass flying when his windshield and left door pane were broken. The front of the car was damaged to the extent of $150.
Coroner W. D. Allen of Bradford was notified and gave permission for removal of the body to the Marsh funeral home at Eldred. Later the remains were brought to the G. L. Gallup and Son funeral home there. State Highway Patrolman John J. Daptula of the Smethport barracks investigated the fatality. He offered the opinion that the motorcycle operator was at fault.  Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Larson, was born at the family home on the Two Mile road. A sophomore at Port Allegany High School, he had left school during the present term and had been employed as an assistant to his father on their farm near Port Allegany. It is believed that he had owned the motorcycle only a short time. Only survivors are his parents.

David Wiles, 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wiles of Bullis Mills, died in Olean General Hospital at about 7 p. m. Friday of a fractured skull received when struck by a car at Bullis

Mills about an hour before. Jay E. Highfield of Knapps Creek, driver of the car, reported to Highway Patrolman John Simpson of Smethport, who investigated, that he had not seen the child until the left fender of his car had struck him. Mr. Highfield and C. E. Paulson of Duke Center, who was riding with him, rushed the tot to the Olean hospital, they reported. Mr. Highfield said he was driving east on the hard-surfaced road that branches off the Eldred-Olean highway at Bullis Mills to the east, and had gone but a short distance from the main road intersection when he spied the boy's sister, Rettamay, 7, playing along the right hand side of the road. When the little girl started across the road, he said, he sounded his horn and she stopped. Then the boy appeared from the left hand side of the road and ran directly into the path of the car, according to reports. Coroner William Smith of Olean, Cattaraugus County was notified. The body was ordered removed to the Marble funeral home at Portville.

David Howard Marble was born at Eldred November 19, 1933, the son of Howard and Emma Wiles. Those surviving him include a brother, James; the sister, Rettamay; his parents, and three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Wiles of Kennedy, N. Y., and Wayne Paisley, of Tidioute.
According to Patrolman Simpson of the Smethport barracks, State High- way Patrol, the father had brought the two children, David and Rettamay, with him in his car from their home, which is located about a mile and a half east of the scene of the accident, and he was in a nearby house at the time.  The car was parked at the south side of the road near where the boy was hit it was said.  The accident occurred in Pennsylvania, a short distance from the State line.
