McKEAN COUNTY NEWSPAPERS

Newspapers were an important medium for recording events. They covered topics of interest to those who lived locally as well as important events on a state or local level. Many mistakes were printed in newspapers because of circumstances under which information was obtained and the rapidity necessary in writing to meet publication deadlines.

Genealogical events and records to look for are: Historical events, marriages, deaths, obituaries, probate sales, and sections and columns of local interest.

At one time there was a law in Pennsylvania that required all county courthouses to collect and store newspapers locally. Some were finally placed in historical societies, some destroyed, and some still remain. The following is a listing of newspapers having been published past to present.

• BRADFORD SUNDAY HERALD, weekly - 1895 on; Publishers have 1922 on.
• BRADFORD NEW ERA, weekly, semi-weekly - 1875 - 1876; one in 1876.
• BRADFORD DAILY RECORD, daily - 1891 - 1908; (joined with Evening Star & Daily Record); Bradford Evening Star, Bradford - 1891 - 1908 complete.
• BRADFORD EVENING STAR & DAILY RECORD - 1879 on; (Bradford Evening Star - 1879 - 1908); Publishers have 1890 - 1897 & 1908 on; Pa. State Library has 1927 to 1933.

The Bradford Era is on micro-film at the Bradford Area Library...is not indexed.

• KANE REPUBLICAN, daily, 1893 on; publishers have complete; on micro-film at Kane High School.

MOUNT JEWETT NEWSPAPER

• MOUNT JEWETT ECHO, weekly, 1922 on; publishers have complete.

• FORESTER & SMETHPORT REGISTER, weekly, 1832 to ?; Historical Society of Pa. has most of 1832 & 1833.
• SETTLER WEEKLY, 1839 - ?; Carnegie Library has 2 copies; 3 other miscellaneous copies.
• MCKEAN COUNTY JOURNAL, weekly, abt. 1836 - one copy.
• MCKEAN COUNTY CITIZEN, weekly. 1854 - ? - one copy.
