The obituaries of ANDREW C. McGOWAN (1906-1986):

 

From "The Tribune," Scranton, Pa. -  Saturday, July 5, 1986:

 

ANDREW C. McGOWAN

     Andrew C. McGowan, 825 Grove St., Avoca, Pa., died Friday (July 4,

1986) at home.  His wife is the former Teresa Scott, a retired school

teacher for the Dupont Public Schools and St. John the Evangelist

Parochial School, Pittston.

     Born [March 5, 1906] in Avoca, son of the late Martin J. and Mary

Ann Gillespie McGowan, he was a retired science teacher and high school

principal in the Avoca School District.  He was also a former

administrator of the Pittston Area School District and a graduate of

Technical High School; the University of Scranton, where he was class

president in 1932;  and Bucknell University where he received a master's degree.  He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Avoca, and its Holy Name Society.

     Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Marianne McGowan Rafalko, a

faculty member at Scranton Technical High School, Scranton;  a son,

Andrew Scott McGowan, Ph.D., Head Counselor in the Yonkers School

District, N.Y., and an adjunct professor at Long Island University;  a

grandson, Andrew Scott McGowan, Jr., Yonkers;  two sisters,  Miss Esther McGowan, Falls, and Mrs. Rose Grady,  Wesley Village, Inkerman;  a number of nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by six

brothers:  William, Leo, Ambrose, Francis, Martin, and Joseph McGowan;

and three sisters:  Mrs. John Gannon (Mabel), Mrs. James Johnson

(Agnes), and Mrs. Edward Walsh (Loretta).

     The funeral will be Monday at the A. F. O'Malley Funeral Home, 718

Main St., Avoca, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St.

Mary's Church, Avoca.  Internment, parish cemetery.

     Friends may call Saturday, 7 to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 2 to 4, 7 to 9

p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School Fund,

Avoca.

"ANDREW C. McGOWAN"

     Retired educator, Andrew C. McGowan, of 825 Grove St., Avoca, Pa,

died Friday, July 4, 1986, at his home.

     Born [March 5, 1906] in Avoca, he was the son  of the late Martin

J. and Mary Ann Gillespie McGowan.

     Mr. McGowan was a teacher and principal of Avoca High School and

administrator of the Pittston Area School District.

     He graduated from the University of Scranton, where he was class

president in 1932.  He earned  a master's degree at Bucknell University

[in 1944]. 

     He was a member of St. Mary's Church of Avoca, and its Holy Name

Society.

     Mr. McGowan was preceded in death by six brothers [William, Leo,

Ambrose, Francis, Martin,  and Joseph] and three sisters [Mrs. John

Gannon (Mabel), Mrs. James Johnson (Agnes), and Mrs. Edward Walsh

(Loretta)].    

     Surviving are his wife, the former Teresa Scott, also a retired

teacher [Dupont Public Schools and St. John the Evangelist  Elementary

School, Pittston];  daughter, Marianne McGowan Rafalko, Scranton;  son,

Dr. Andrew Scott McGowan, Yonkers, NY;  one grandson, Andrew Scott

McGowan, Jr.;  sisters,  Miss Esther McGowan, Falls;  Mrs. Rose Grady,

Wesley Village, Inkerman;  a number of nieces and nephews. 

     Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 9 a.m. at the A.F.

O'Malley Funeral Home, 728 Main St., Avoca, with  Mass of Christian

Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church.  Interment will be in the

parish cemetery.  Friends may call today from 7 to 9 and Sunday from 2

to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

     Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary's School Fund,

Avoca.

      The funeral of Andrew C. McGowan was held today from the A. F.

O'Malley Funeral Home, 718 Main St., Avoca, with Mass of Christian

Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Avoca.  Internment, parish

cemetery.  Celebrant was Father Eugene Gunning, pastor. Readers of the

Gospel:  Shirley Walsh Burke and Delores Gannon Croke, both nieces;

Pallbearers:  John and Ambrose McGowan, James and Charles Johnson,

Joseph Walsh, and Patrick F. Grady, III, all nephews.

"MARTIN McGOWAN, JR."

     Martin McGowan, Jr., four month old [born September 1907] infant

son of Martin J. and Mary Ann Gillespie McGowan, 919 South Street,

The obituary of JOSEPH McGOWAN (1909-1967):

"JOSEPH McGOWAN IS DEATH VICTIM"

     Joseph McGowan of Berkeley Heights, N.J., formerly of Avoca, Pa.,

died last night [February 9, 1967] at the Rahway General Hospital, N.J.

     Born [June 24, 1909] in Avoca, Mr. McGowan was the son of the late

Martin J. and Mary Ann Gillespie McGowan.  He resided in New Jersey 15

years [and for many years in New York City] and was employed at the John Runnells Hospital, Berkeley Heights, as a dietary supervisor.  Mr.

McGowan was a member of the Visitation Church, Berkeley Heights.  An

Army veteran of World War II, he received the Purple Heart Medal.       

     Surviving are [a son, Richard of New Jersey and several

grandchildren];  sisters, Mrs. Mabel Gannon, New York City;  Mrs.

Loretta Walsh, Thompsonville, Conn.;  Miss Esther McGowan, Newark,

N.J.;  and Mrs. Rose Grady, Avoca;  brothers,  Ambrose, Francis, and

Andrew C., principal of Commercial High School, Hughestown, all of

Avoca; [and several nieces and nephews].  [He was predeceased by three

brothers, William, Leo, and Martin McGowan, and a sister, Mrs. James

Johnson (Agnes)].    

     Funeral will be held Monday from the O'Malley Funeral Home, 728

Main Street, Avoca.  Friends may call beginning Saturday, 2 to 4 and 7

to 10.  [Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church at 9:30.  Interment, St.

Mary’s Cemetery, Avoca].

 

JOSEPH McGOWAN FUNERAL

     Joseph McGowan, Berkley Heights, N.J., former Avoca resident;  this morning from the O'Malley Funeral Home, 728 Main St., Avoca, with mass in St. Mary's Church, that community.

     The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph Griffin was celebrant;  the Rev. Eugene

Carr, deacon, and the Rev. Edward Gerrity, subdeacon.

     Casket bearers:  Scott and John McGowan, James Johnson, Patrick

Grady, Joseph Walsh, all nephews, and George Zuttowski, grand-nephew.

Burial, parish cemetery.
