The obituary of FRANCIS (BUTCH) McGOWAN (1901-1978):

 

From "The Scranton Times," Scranton, Pa., October 5, 1978:

 

"FRANCIS McGOWAN"

     Francis (Butch) McGowan, 800 McAlpine St., Avoca, Pa, died

Wednesday, Oct. 4, 1978, at home.   His widow is the former Jeanette

Moore.

     Born [November 21, 1901] in Avoca, son of the late Martin J. and

Mary Ann Gillespie McGowan, he was a member of St. Mary's Church, Avoca, and was a retired employee of the Craft Oil Co., Avoca..

     Mr. McGowan was preceded in death by five brothers [William, Leo,

Ambrose, Martin, and Joseph] and three sisters [Mrs. John Gannon

(Mabel), Mrs. James Johnson (Agnes), and Mrs. Edward Walsh

(Loretta)].    

     Also surviving are a son, James McGowan, Ellicot City, Md.;  a

grandchild, Megan;  a brother, Andrew C., Avoca;  two sisters, Miss

Esther McGowan, Newark, N.J.;  Mrs. Rose Grady, Avoca;  and several

nieces and nephews. 

     Funeral services will be Saturday A.F. O'Malley Funeral Home, 728

Main St., Avoca, with  Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church.

Interment, Langcliffe Cemetery, Avoca.  Friends may call Friday 2 to 4

and 7 to 9 p.m.

 

 

 

The obituary of ESTHER C. McGOWAN (1902-1991):

"ESTHER McGOWAN"

       Esther C. McGowan, Falls, RD 1, Pa., died Monday (August 5, 1991) at Wesley Village, Jenkins Twp.

       Born [November 28, 1902] in Avoca, daughter of the late Martin J. and Mary Ann Gillespie McGowan, she was a member of St. Mary's Church, Avoca.  Prior to retirement, she was employed as a secretary for Westinghouse Corp., Newark, N.J.  

       Surviving are a sister,  Mrs. Rose Grady, Avoca, and nieces and

nephews, including Jack McGowan, with whom she resided. 

       She was predeceased in death by seven brothers, William, Leo,

Ambrose, Francis, Andrew, Joseph, and Martin McGowan, and three sisters, Mrs. John Gannon (Mabel), Mrs. James Johnson (Agnes), and Mrs. Edward Walsh (Loretta).    

     Funeral will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the A. F. O'Malley III

Funeral Home, 728 Main Street, Avoca, with mass at 9:30 in St. Mary's

Church, Avoca.  Interment, parish cemetery.

 

 

The obituary of ROSE McGOWAN GRADY (MRS. PATRICK F. GRADY, SR.)

1902-1991:

"ROSE GRADY, AVOCA RESIDENT, DIED MONDAY"

     Rose Grady, R.N., formerly of 912 Hope St., Avoca, Pa., died  Monday (September 30, 1991) at Wesley Village, Jenkins Twp., after an illness.

She had resided at the center for the past four years.

     Born [August 10, 1904] in Avoca, she was the daughter of the late

Martin J. and Mary Ann Gillespie McGowan.  She was a graduate of Avoca

High School, Lackawanna Business College and graduated in 1932 from the

Mary Keller School of Nursing, Scranton.  She was employed as a

registered nurse in Scranton area hospitals, prior to retiring.   She

was a member of St. Mary's Church, Avoca, and its Altar and Rosary

Society.  She was also a member of Mary Keller Alumni Association.      

     She was predeceased in death by her husband, Patrick, in 1964;

sisters, Mrs. John Gannon (Mabel), Mrs. James Johnson (Agnes), Mrs.

Edward Walsh (Loretta), and Esther McGowan [who died this past August];

brothers, William, Leo, Ambrose, Francis, Andrew, Joseph, and Martin

McGowan.

     Surviving are a son, Patrick F. Grady, Stroudsburg;  three

grandchildren, Patrick, Marirose, and Caitlin;  several nieces and

nephews.

     Funeral services were held Friday from the Ruane and Regan Funeral

Home, 1308 Grove St., Avoca, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St.

Mary's Church, Avoca.  Interment was in the parish cemetery.
