ANDREW C. McGOWAN

     Andrew C. McGowan, 825 Grove St., Avoca, Pa., died Friday (July 4,

1986) at home.  His wife is the former Teresa Scott, a retired school

teacher for the Dupont Public Schools and St. John the Evangelist

Parochial School, Pittston.

     Born [March 5, 1906] in Avoca, son of the late Martin and Mary Ann

Gillespie McGowan, he was a retired science teacher and high school

principal in the Avoca School District.  He was a former administrator

of the Pittston Area School District and a graduate of Technical High

School; the University of Scranton, where he was class president in

1932;  and Bucknell University where he received a master's degree.  He

was a member of St. Mary's Church, Avoca, and its Holy Name Society.

     Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Marianne McGowan Rafalko, a

faculty member at Scranton Technical High School, Scranton;  a son,

Andrew Scott McGowan, Ph.D., a faculty member in the Yonkers School

District, N.Y., and an adjunct professor at Long Island University;  a

grandson, Andrew Scott McGowan, Jr., Yonkers;  two sisters,  Miss Esther McGowan, Falls, and Mrs. Rose Grady,  Wesley Village, Inkerman;  a number of nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by six

brothers:  William, Leo, Ambrose, Francis, Martin,  and Joseph McGowan;

and three sisters: Mrs. John Gannon (Mabel), Mrs. James Johnson (Agnes), and Mrs. Edward Walsh (Loretta).

     The funeral will be Monday at the A. F. O'Malley Funeral Home, 718

Main St., Avoca, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Avoca.  Internment, parish cemetery.

     Friends may call Saturday, 7 to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 2 to 4, 7 to 9

p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School Fund, Avoca.

"ANDREW C. McGOWAN"

     Retired educator, Andrew C. McGowan, of 825 Grove St., Avoca, Pa,

died Friday, July 4, 1986, at his home.

     Born in Avoca, he was the son  of the late Martin J. and Mary Ann

Gillespie McGowan.

     Mr.  McGowan was a teacher and principal of Avoca High School and

administrator of the Pittston Area School District.

     He graduated from the University of Scranton, where he was class

president in 1932.  He earned  a master's degree at Bucknell University

[in 1944]. 

     He was a member of St. Mary's Church of Avoca, and its Holy Name

Society.

     Mr. McGowan was preceded in death by six brothers [William, Leo,

Ambrose, Francis, Martin, and Joseph] and three sisters [Mrs. John

Gannon (Mabel), Mrs. James Johnson (Agnes), and Mrs. Edward Walsh

(Loretta)].    

     Surviving are his wife, the former Teresa Scott, also a retired

teacher [Dupont Public Schools and St. John the Evangelist Elementary

School, Pittston];  daughter, Marianne McGowan Rafalko, Scranton;  son,

Dr. Andrew Scott McGowan, Yonkers, NY;  one grandson, Andrew Scott

McGowan, Jr.;  sisters,  Miss Esther McGowan, Falls;  Mrs. Rose Grady,

Wesley Village, Inkerman;  a number of nieces and nephews. 

     Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 9 a.m. at the A.F.

O'Malley Funeral Home, 728 Main St., Avoca, with  Mass of Christian

Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church.  Interment will be in the

parish cemetery.  Friends may call today from 7 to 9 and Sunday from 2

to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

     Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary's School Fund,

Avoca.

O'Malley Funeral Home, 718 Main St., Avoca, with Mass of Christian

Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Avoca.  Internment, parish

cemetery.  Celebrant was Father Eugene Gunning, pastor. Readers were

Shirley Walsh Burke and Delores Gannon Croke, nieces. Pallbearers:  John and Ambrose McGowan, James and Charles Johnson, Joseph Walsh, and

Patrick F. Grady, III, all nephews.

TERESA McGOWAN

     Mrs. Teresa McGowan, 825 Grove St., Avoca, Pa., died Friday (July

11, 1986) at home after a brief illness.  Her husband, Andrew C.

McGowan, died one week ago, July 4, 1986.  They would have celebrated

their 47th wedding anniversary today.

     Born [September 17, 1906] in Pittston [Sebastopol, Jenkins

Township], daughter of the late Winfield and Margaret Keenan Scott, she

was a graduate of St. John the Evangelist High School, Pittston, and

Mansfield State Teachers College.  She was a retired teacher from the

Dupont public schools and St. John the Evangelist Parochial School.  She was also formerly employed at Field's Millinery Shop, Pittston.  She was a member of Avoca Senior Citizens and St. Mary's Church, Avoca, and its Altar and Rosary Society.

     Surviving are a  daughter, Mrs. Marianne McGowan Rafalko, a

librarian at Scranton Technical High School, Scranton ;  son, Andrew

Scott McGowan, Ph.D., head counselor at Roosevelt High School, Yonkers

School District, NY, and a professor at Long Island University;  a

grandson, Andrew Scott McGowan, Jr.;  several nieces and nephews.

     She was preceded in death by four brothers [Charles, William, John, and Winfield Scott] and six sisters [Mrs. Thomas King (Agnes), Helen Scott, Mary E. Scott, Anna Scott, Margaret Scott, and Mrs. James Gerard Conaty, Jr. (Elizabeth), all of Sebastopol].

     The funeral will be  Monday from the A. F. O'Malley Funeral Home,

728 Main Street, Avoca, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St.

Mary's Church, Avoca.  Internment, parish cemetery.

MRS. ANDREW C. McGOWAN

      The funeral of Andrew C. McGowan, the former Teresa Scott, was

held today from the A. F. O'Malley Funeral Home, 718 Main St., Avoca,

with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Avoca.

Internment, parish cemetery.  Celebrant was Father Eugene Gunning,

pastor. The choir from St. Peter's Cathedral, Scranton, sang the hymns

at the mass. Readers were Ann Marie King Menta and Mary Curry Stokely,

nieces.  Pallbearers:  William Scott, Jr., William Scott III, Eugene

King, John McGowan, Patrick F. Grady, III, and Dominick Menta, all

nephews.
