DEATH:

While Miss JOSIE TOOLE, an estimable young lady of Nanticoke, was standing near a stove in the house of her brother-in-law, JAMES NEIDHAM, recently, a heavy stone which had been set in the wall to receive the stove pipe fell and cut a deep gash in her head.  She was carried in an unconscious condition to her room where she remained until Sunday evening when death came.  Miss TOOLE had been quite ill up to a short time before her accident and her friends were looking forward to a speedy recovery.  The funeral took place this morning after impressive ceremonies in St Francis Catholic Church.

 

 

Mrs REILLY, widow of the late HUGH REILLY, of Ashley, who died suddenly Sunday evening at the home of her son-in-law, P SMITH, of Newtown, the result of a rupture, was 77 years of age.  Funeral tomorrow morning at 9:30 from St Leo’s church, Ashley

DEATHS:

Mrs HOWARD PARKINSON of Hanover Station, nee Miss LYDIA DANIELS of Wilkes-Barre died yesterday, age 28.  She was a sister of THOMAS C DANIEL steward of the Westmoreland club of this city, and was a native of Weymouth, Dorsetshire, England, having been in this country about eight years.  She was a sufferer some time ago from quinzy and this was followed by an attack of pneumonia about a week ago.  While weakened by these ailments she gave birth to a child, which died on Sunday.  Mrs PARKINSON was a member of the Episcopal Church at Alden.  Mother and babe will be buried together tomorrow at 2 o’clock.

 

GEORGE WOODLING, of 174 Hazle street, died yesterday at 4 o’clock, aged 31. The funeral will occur Friday at 4 pm from the house.  The remains will be taken to the Parrish street M. E. Church.  Interment will be made in the City cemetery.

In Wilkes-Barre Tuesday evening Apr 2, MARY M, daughter of CONRAD LONG, aged 6 weeks and 4 days.  Funeral tomorrow at 4 p.m.

 

 

MINE ACCIDENT NO. 4 SLOPE IN NANTICOKE – THREE ARE DEAD:

An explosion occurred about 9 o’clock in the sixth lift of the west gangway. The slope is situated in the heart of the borough and thus the place is readily accessible.  Rescuing parties promptly entered the slope and the work of ascertaining extent of the casualties begun at once.  About 11 o’clock the rescuers appeared at the surface bearing the bodies of the dead and injured.  By one o’clock all had been brought to the surface.  The following men are killed and injured:

GEORGE ALMY, fire boss, slightly burned, walked home

It is thought that the fire was started by JOHN J GRIFFITH, the brattice man, who carried a naked lamp.  The gas probably came from a blower at the side of the slope.

 

 

BRIEFS:

The naphtha lamps of the city burned 433 hours short during March, and the electric lights 208 hours

 

Vital statistics show a total of 56 deaths in Wilkes-Barre during March, ten from pneumonia, and five from consumption

 

Electric cars to Five Points.  The Suburban Electric Railroad directors held a meeting last night and decided to commence

at once the extension of the Scott street route.  The cars now carry red and blue flags.  The red flag cars run up Canal street

and the blue flag cars up Main street.  Rapid transit between the Square and North Wilkes-Barre will be afforded by cars

which will run between the two points only.

DEATHS:

JACOB GALLAND, a resident of Wilkes-Barre, died at the residence of his son in New York this morning at 8 o’clock. 

Mr GALLAND was the father of three young men engaged in the manufacturing business in this city and of

BERTHOLD GALLAND in Scranton.  He was born in Prussia and had been a resident of Wilkes-Barre for eight years.

 The sons in business here and in New York are EUGENE, GEORGE, and MAX.  The deceased was 65 years of age and

had been a merchant until a few years ago when he retired.  The funeral will take place Sunday in Scranton

THE NANTICOKE EXPLOSION:

MORGAN PRICE who was so badly injured in slope No. 4 at Nanticoke yesterday died soon after 8 o’clock in the evening.

 He was conscious for a time after being removed to his home.  He said he was blown clear through a brattice by the first

 explosion, and just as he was regaining consciousness he was again rolled along like a ball some 50 feet by the force of

the concussion.  Price ’s clothing was burned entirely off.

JOHN ZUBOVAGE was blown off his feet and into a car.  At the same time a quantity of falling rock covered him up except

for part of his head.  The body was extricated with extreme difficulty.

The explosion of yesterday occurred very near the spot where engineer E C SCHAUFUS and an assistant were killed some

months ago.  The funerals of WM. A JAMES, JOSEPH ADAMS, and JOHN ZUBOVAGE will be held tomorrow.

JOHN GRIFFITH was reported very low this morning but unless complications set in he will pull through.  He is badly

burned on his head and face and his thigh is broken.

MICHAEL BARINSKY and JOSEPH BERANKSKIE have been taken to the City Hospital.

The former has a broken leg and one eye blown out.  The latter is badly burned on his hands and face.  Both will recover

it is thought.

 

 

WILL FILED:

The will of ELILU JENNINGS was filed today.  She bequeaths her property in Nanticoke to her son JAMES in New York.  It

consists of one house and one lot.

SARAH, wife of STEPHEN C CONROY, of 47 South Grant street, died at 4:30 this morning at the age of 36 years.  The funeral

will take place on Sunday at 3 p.m. from her late home.  She leaves a husband and three children

 

From Plymouth:  PATRICK, the two year old son of MICHAEL BRESLIN, died yesterday.  Funeral Saturday

 

From Plymouth:  An eight year of daughter of RICHARD FLAHERTY, of Willow street, died yesterday afternoon

 

From Plymouth:  Mrs CHARLES SALVAGE, aged 48 years, died of dropsy at her home on Welsh Hill yesterday.  She leaves

a husband and family to mourn her demise

All five children of CALVIN PARSONS assembled at his home in Parsons on Tuesday the occasion of his 75th birthday.  These

 were: Mrs E C COLE of Ashley, Mrs C P KIDDER, Mrs G W FISH of Waverly New York, HEZEKIAH PARSONS, and Major

 O A PARSONS.  Most of the grandchildren were present and Miss MATTEE of Scranton, sister of Mrs HEZEKIAH PARSONS

Mrs OWEN SMITH died last evening at 10 o’clock of pneumonia.  She was 63 years old and leaves eight children.  The funeral

will take place Monday morning at 10 o’clock from the residence, 390 Hazle street.

 

A little four year old daughter of ANDREW YACKS, who was living with her uncle, ANDREW YERNICK, while her father was in

New York, set fire to a straw mattress I the yard Thursday and the fire ignited her clothing.  She was so badly burned she died in

a few hours.

In Wilkes-Barre Apr 4, Mrs OWEN SMITH, of pneumonia, aged 63

 

C ROUSE, for sixteen years superintendent of the Laflin Powder Co works, a leading Republican and President of the Laflin

Borough Council, died suddenly at his home in Laflin last evening of inflammation of the bowels. Deceased was interested in

 the Wilkes-Barre lace factory and Newell Clothing Co of this city

 

Mrs BRIDGET HEERY, for 56 years a resident of Scott Street, this city and a native of County Longford, Ireland, died at her

 home last night aged 75 years.  Her husband was killed in April 1866, in the Baltimore No. 3 colliery, but the deceased is survived

by three adult children – Mrs ANN FARLEY, Mrs MARY LAVERY, and PATRICK HEERY, ex-policeman, all of Wilkes-Barre.

 

 

FUNERAL:

From Plymouth:  The funeral of CHARLES SMITH took place yesterday and was largely attended.

 

 

RELIEF FUND FOR MINERS KILLED IN THE SOUTH WILKES-BARRE ACCIDENT:

The total amount to be distributed is $ 805.87.  The families who have a claim on the funds were present this morning at a

 meeting to discuss the distribution of these funds.  The families include:

Mrs MARY O’DONNELL: of Spring street, Newtown; has three children.  Her husband was among the killed.  Her oldest

child is seven years

Mrs EMMA DUGAN: 35, Jones street; has four children.  Her husband is also among the lost.  The oldest child is

seven years.

Mrs ELLA WILLIAMSON, 27 Mill Street, is an invalid, and has four children, the oldest of which is eight years

Mrs MARY CULL, 44 Jones Street, has six children, the youngest, a baby in arms and the oldest 20 years

Mr and Mrs JOSEPH MCDONALD lost a son who was their only support; he was twenty years of age

THOMAS JAMIESON lost a son aged 17 years

The committee gave JOSEPH MCDONNELL and THOMAS JAMIESON $75 each and the balance of the funds is to be divided

among the four widows.  Each received $15 today and the balance will be paid to them at the rate of $15 each per month  until it

 is exhausted.  No one was present to represent MICHAEL FERRY and JOHN MCNEALIS, and it is understood that the former

was single with well-to-do parents, and the latter has no relatives in this country.  A mother survives him n Europe however.

COURT OF COMMON PLEAS: Divorce Actions:

SUSANNA EVANS today petitioned for a divorce from DAVID S EVANS.  She states that marriage took place Feb 10, 1888,

and he offered such indignities to her person as to make her life burdensome and forced her to withdraw from his home.

 

 

ADOPTION:

The court decided today the adoption of HELEN KIRK, an infant girl, by HENRY ARMITAGE, a well to do resident of Pittston. 

The mother and child are residents of Jermyn, Lackawanna Co.

 

 

DEATHS:

Mrs ELIZABETH A STEWART, wife of JOHN STEWART, died at her residence in Scranton at 9:20 this morning.  She was

born in Wilkes-Barre township, now Plains township, February 28, 1819.  She was the daughter of EZRA WILLIAMS, and

granddaughter of Sergeant THOMAS WILLIAMS, noted in the struggles of early Wyoming and the Revolutionary war. 

She left to survive her, besides her husband, who is critically ill, five daughters, Mrs GEORGE B KULP, and Mrs W D

LOOMIS of this city;  Mrs C B SCOTT, Mrs S M STEVENS, and Mrs L  CHESSLER of Scranton.

 

An infant son of JOHN T KNEILLE of 111 North Street died on Sunday night at 12 o‘clock.  Funeral Wednesday at 8 o’clock. 

Interment at Mauch Chunk.

DEATHS:

PATRICK MOONEY died in the Wilkes-Barre hospital at 2 o’clock this morning from injuries received yesterday by a squeeze

in Haddock and Co.’s mine at Luzerne borough.  The deceased was widely known hereabouts as Squire MOONEY. He had

 lived for many years at Warrior Run, where he served as tax collector and as Justice of the Peace.  He had only moved from

 there, in fact, a few weeks ago to accept a place in the mine where he met his death.  He was a careful miner and an unusually

intelligent man and his taking off under such circumstances is striking evidence of the risks even the most competent and

cautious of his avocation are constantly running.  He was an active man in the old miner’s union, held the position of Treasurer

of it, and after presided at conventions of miner’s, being regarded as having special qualifications for such positions.  He served

 faithfully during the war in the 9th Pennsylvania cavalry, and was among the squad who captured the person of Jeff Davis at

 its close.  He was a member of Ely Post G. A. R., of this city, and was well thought of by all of his comrades.

DEATHS:

From yesterday’s Scranton Truth: On Wednesday, JOHN STEWART, a well-known Scranton citizen.  Mr STEWART became

 ill a week ago last Sunday.  He was attacked with the grip.  Nervous prostration also set in.  On Tuesday of this week, Mrs

STEWART died.  It was not considered advisable, on account of Mr STEWART’S low condition, to tell him about his wife’s

 death, and he died without knowing that she had gone before him, although in his periods of consciousness during yesterday,

and Tuesday, he said he believed because of

the sadness of his family, that Mrs STEWART had died.  The funeral for Mrs STEWART had been fixed for this morning, but

on account of Mr STEWART’s case, it has been postponed, and husband and wife will be buried at the same time.  The services

 will take place in the First M. E. Church at 12 o’clock noon on Saturday, to be conducted by Rev Dr C C McClain.  The remains

will be taken to Wilkes-Barre for interment in Hollenback cemetery.  Mr Stewart was married in December 1842 to ELIZABETH

A WILLIAMS, of Plains township. They are survived by five children: Mrs GEORGE B KULP, and Mrs W D LOOMIS, both

 of Wilkes-Barre; Mrs C B SCOTT, Mrs L C HESSLER, and Mrs S M STEVENS. Mrs STEVENS has been seriously ill in the

 house in which her father and mother died.  (condensed)

 

Mrs BRIDGET KANE, an estimable young lady resident in Georgetown, died suddenly yesterday at her home by the b

ursting of a blood vessel.  Miss Kane was 19 years of age and was the daughter of the late JAMES KANE.  The funeral

 will take place Saturday afternoon at 1 o’clock.  Interment in the old Catholic cemetery on Darling street.

 

Mrs ANN COMPSON, widow of JONAS W COMPSON, who has just died at Alloway, N. J., at the age of 71 years, was the

 mother of Mrs T S TROUTMAN, of Wilkes-Barre.  The deceased leaves four sons and nine daughters, all of whom were

present at her death, except for one who lives in Oregon

The funeral of JAMES FERGUSON will take place tomorrow at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon from the residence, corner of

 morning, in the church of St Ignatius, Kingston.  The rite was solemnized by the Rev Father Kernan, of Dallas, in the presence of

 a large number of witnesses.  Miss B QUINN, of Avoca, assumed with much grace the role of bridesmaid, while the duties of

groomsman devolved upon JAMES MOORE, of Plymouth.  Among the guests were: a brother of the bride, JAMES MEIGHAN,

 of Elmira, NY; Misses JENNIE and MAME WILD; JAMES LYNCH and family, and the Misses BRENLY of Plymouth; JOHN A

MACK, and R A MULHALL, of Forty Fort.  Mr and Mrs LYNCH left by train for Athens where they will reside.

 

On Monday evening the wedding of THOMAS DOWNES, of Spinnymoor, England, and Miss LAVINIA JOSEPHINE

MCDERMOTT of Auckland, England, were united in marriage at St Mary’s Church, Rev Father Jordan being the officiating

clergyman.  The bridegroom is the son of ROBERT DOWNES of Wilkes-Barre, and is employed by Charles Parrish.  The bride

is the daughter of MARTIN MCDERMOTT.  JOSEPH RICE acted as groomsman, while Miss ANNIE DOWNES, sister of the

groom, and Miss MAMIE MCDERMOTT, sister of the bride, were the bridesmaids.  They will reside on Ross Street.

At Tunkhannock Apr 11, of complication of diseases, Judge C D GEARHART, aged 62 years.  Deceased was a son of

Dr HARRISON GEARHART and was born in Columbia Co in 1828.  In 1860 he was census marshall of the county and in

 1872 was appointed associate judge.  Six children and his wife survive him: Mrs M H FRANTZ of Wilkes-Barre; Mrs

JAMES H LEHR of Easton; Misses CATHERINE and EVA GEARHART of Tunkhannock; and GEORGE and HARMON,

 also of Tunkhannock. The funeral will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the house.
