He was one of the funniest people I ever 2 CONT met in my life. He could tell a joke, but it was the way he teased us and 2 CONT the off the cuff remarks that got me. We all loved him very much. I have 2 CONT so many memories of him, I can't seem to choose one or two. 2 CONT 2 CONT Perry started his life on the family farm in West Milton. During the 2 CONT winter months, he took carpentry jobs in the city (Dayton). When he 2 CONT married Satia Flowers, he moved to the city and became a full time 2 CONT carpenter. They had two children, Carl and Earl. One winter, Satia caught 2 CONT the flu and never recovered. He was about 26 years old with small 2 CONT children. Treva Karns went to same church and began to look after the 2 CONT boys for him. She was 17. They became close and married that year. When 2 CONT we asked Grandma what her parents thought of her marring a man so much 2 CONT older than herself who had children, she was surprised. "He was a Hoke. I 2 CONT don't know how it is out where you live (WA), but around here a name 2 CONT means something. My parents were very happy that I was marrying into such 2 CONT a good family." I'll bet that's all they said! I'll bet she had a more 2 CONT difficult time with her extemely devout father-in-law, Eli. 2 CONT 2 CONT During the Great Depression, they lived in repossessed homes. Treva's 2 CONT uncle worked in a bank. He arranged for Perry to repair homes the bank 2 CONT had forclosed on. In exchange for fixing them, the family got to live in 2 CONT them while repairs were being done. 2 CONT 2 CONT Eventually, they bought a piece of land on Wilimington Ave. in Dayton. 2 CONT They had a large house at the end of the Trolly line. The property is 2 CONT located about 3 blocks from the intersection of Wilimington and Patterson 2 CONT Rd. and has an Apartment complex on it now. It is bordered by the big 2 CONT field at Horace Mann Elementry School. Their son built his home on the 2 CONT other side of the school, and another lived next door. His daughter a 2 CONT lived a couple of blocks away, and we lived a few blocks from them all! I 2 CONT have vague memories of the big house. They sold it and moved a few blocks 2 CONT off Patterson in a neighborhood known as Patterson Park. They lived 2 CONT exactly two blocks behind our house. When my parents were away, Grandpa 2 CONT would go upstairs and get his binoculars out. He would check on us and if 2 CONT we were doing anything suspecious, we got a call. It took a long time to 2 CONT figure out just how he always managed to know what we were doing. 2 CONT 2 CONT Perry was a lay minister at the East Dayton Church of the Brethren. He 2 CONT lead adult Sunday School, was on various committees (including the 2 CONT Building Committee) and lead services when Brother Bright was away. While 2 CONT he was a deeply spiritual man and very involved with his church, he still 2 CONT knew how to party. There was a time when it was politically correct to 2 CONT have a couple of drinks on Friday night. I have many memories of my 2 CONT Grandpa and Uncles having intense discussions while having a few beers 2 CONT and playing cards or horseshoes. 2 CONT 2 CONT Perry kept himself busy. When he was in his 70's, he would borrow my 2 CONT bicycle to take his great-grandchildren for a ride. He loved to work in 2 CONT his yard and kept his bird feeder full. When they passed away, my father 2 CONT moved the bird fountain to his yard. He spent hours gluing it back 2 CONT together and managed to make it water tight. 2 CONT 2 CONT In his 80's, Perry took up woodcarving. We all have the evidence proudly 2 CONT displayed. It would best be described as rustic art, but I cherish every 2 CONT piece. My favorites are the ones he "broke" and tried to fix. I have a 2 CONT donkey (or horse) with a leg that falls off. He fixed it by putting a 2 CONT toothpick (dowel) in the body and a hole in the leg to hold it together. 2 CONT When the glue held it worked, unfortunately, the glue didn't last long. I 2 CONT also have several heads with big screws in them to serve as a base that 2 CONT are interesting.... Not only was he old, but his eyesight was failing 2 CONT him. Grandma made the observation that "After laser surgery, he could see 2 CONT much better, but for some reason his carving didn't improve much..." 2 CONT 2 CONT I was fortunate that I lived so close to my grandparents and frequently 2 CONT stopped by on my way home from school. I also was fortunate to be one of 2 CONT "the girls" as Kathy, Kris, Julie, and I were referred to (and still 2 CONT are!) My other cousins, Steve, Bev, Becky, Tom, and Jim, babysat us and 2 CONT we attended each others school and sporting events. My older cousins, 2 CONT Steve, Becky, and Bev married when I was under 11. Becky married one of 2 CONT the boys who lived across the street from me. I played with his younger 2 CONT brother. Steve married a girl who lived down the street from me. She was 2 CONT another one of my babysitters. Bevie brought a really cute guy home from 2 CONT college. We girls loved him from the minute he jumped out of the closet 2 CONT and chased us through the house tickling us. I can't remember not loving 2 CONT Paul, Judy, and John like the rest of my cousins. 2 CONT 2 CONT He had a wheezy laugh and his eyes twinkled when he teased us. He loved 2 CONT girls and was a flirt all his life. I can't count the number of times he 2 CONT would grab our knees to tickle them. I can still feel my Grandma's arm go 2 CONT across me to hit him and hear her say "Oh! Pop!" (She said that alot) 2 CONT 2 CONT Grandpa always kept rolls of peppermint lifesavers in the kitchen. First, 2 CONT he would make me eat black licorice, he said it was to keep my liver 2 CONT clean but I think he was hoping I would make a face like Kathy, Kris, and 2 CONT Julie. Then he let me have a roll of lifesavers. We had a secret from 2 CONT Grandma. When we were alone, he called me Stacia. His first wife was 2 CONT Sadia. Grandma didn't like it when he called me that. 2 CONT 2 CONT On Sunday morning, my grandparents would pick us girls up for church (so 2 CONT our parents could sleep!) and sometimes we would stay at their house. We 2 CONT loved being with them, but hated the room upstairs. The bed was very old 2 CONT and still had ropes instead of a box spring. Every time one person moved, 2 CONT the bed swayed. Grandma and Grandpa would leave the bedroom door open and 2 CONT we could see right down the hallway. On the wall facing the bedroom were 2 CONT old group pictures of the Hoke Family. In the dark, with moonlight 2 CONT shinning on them, their faces looked like little eyes. We would get so 2 CONT scared! As adults, Julie and I have fought over who had to sleep upstairs 2 CONT and who got the couch. I know I have a very creative imagination, but I 2 CONT swear this is true.... 2 CONT 2 CONT The year my Grandpa turned 90, the family had a big party for him. Julie 2 CONT and I flew home for Thanksgiving (his birthday usually fell near it) and 2 CONT I took my 18 month old son, Samuel with me. I took Samuel upstairs when 2 CONT he was drowsy and put him in the crib. As soon as I left the room, he 2 CONT started crying. I went back up, got him settled and just about to sleep 2 CONT and tried to leave again. He became hysterical. I gave up, told my 2 CONT Grandparents good-night, and went upstairs. I was reading in bed and kept 2 CONT seeing movement out of the corner of my eye. Samuel was sound asleep and 2 CONT I was alone. Suddenly, I got the feeling that someone who loved me and my 2 CONT son was in the room with us, that they were standing by the crib watching 2 CONT the baby, and I got the impression that it was my Great-grandmother 2 CONT Sarah. It gave me a great sense of peace. The next morning, I told my 2 CONT Grandma about my experience, I remember my words were "Grandma, you have 2 CONT spirits upstairs". She turned pale and told me I was letting my 2 CONT imagination run away with me. After church I told my Aunt Sue about my 2 CONT experience and she warned me not to say anything to Grandma. I told her 2 CONT she was too late. She told me that the prior week Grandma had been 2 CONT walking by the door to the stairs and noticed the light coming from under 2 CONT the door. She opened the door to turn off the light but it wasn't on. 2 CONT Now, I don't know if my Aunt was jerking my chain, but I do know what I 2 CONT felt. My Grandpa died two weeks later. I truly believe he was met by his 2 CONT mother and she was waiting for him. It also pleases me to think she was 2 CONT there when all of his children and grandchildren came to his house to 2 CONT wish him happy birthday. She didn't live to see any of them. 2 CONT 2 CONT To quote George W. Hoke from the Hoke Family History book "The purpose 2 CONT and spirit of that first reunion continues with us today. God grant that 2 CONT it may be so until all the children and grandchildren, even to the last 2 CONT generation, are safely Home." 0 @I100@ INDI 1 NAME Treva Eileen /Karnes/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 3 JUL 1907 2 PLAC Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio 1 DEAT 2 DATE JUN 1997 2 PLAC Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio 1 REFN 324 1 FAMS @F003@ 1 FAMC @F006@ 1 NOTE My Grandma was one of the most loving people I know. She always made me 2 CONT feel loved, even when I was bouncing around driving her crazy. I loved 2 CONT her very much. In writing this, I realize what an influence she has been 2 CONT on me. 2 CONT 2 CONT Treva was the oldest daughter of John and Velma Karns. She was born in 2 CONT Dayton, Ohio and grew up in the city. Her father held various jobs, 2 CONT Trolly Driver, Farmer, Truck Driver, and finally he did maintance for the 2 CONT Dayton public schools. 2 CONT 2 CONT She had vivid memories of her grandparents that she shared with Julie and 2 CONT I during one of our visits. She was the oldest granddaughter on the 2 CONT Brooks side of the family. She loved to spend time with her Grandparents. 2 CONT Usually, she visited on weekends and school vacations. They lived on a 2 CONT big farm with an orchard. The cold cellar had a creek that ran through it 2 CONT to keep their dairy and other foods cool. During the week, they would 2 CONT load up a big wagon and take their produce into town. Treva liked to go 2 CONT down to the Farmers Market and see them. Their main product was milk, 2 CONT butter, and cheese, but they also sold her Grandmother's baked goods. 2 CONT 2 CONT The days on their farm sound like typical farm days. They got up at the 2 CONT crack of dawn and while the men were milking, the women began cooking for 2 CONT the day. They had a huge breakfast. Her uncles would sit on a long bench 2 CONT on one side of the table. Grandma had a special place next to her 2 CONT Grandfather and he always made sure her plate got filled. She didn't have 2 CONT to fight the boys for the food. They said thanks for the blessings and 2 CONT her Grandma and Aunt would have a hard time keeping the dishes filled. 2 CONT Then the men went out to the field or the orchard. The women did the 2 CONT dishes and began to cook again. When Treva was little, she carried a 2 CONT water bucket out to the field for the men to have a drink. When she was 2 CONT older, she began to help with the cooking and cleaning. 2 CONT 2 CONT Her other Grandma was named (I think) Martin. Her maiden name was Frantz. 2 CONT She owned the land that is now the Salem Mall in Dayton. She lived to be 2 CONT at least 90 and died at her home in Englewood. Grandma remembers her 2 CONT hitching up her wagon to drive to town when she was in her 80's. That 2 CONT side of her family were Doctors, Lawyers, Dentists, and Judges. 2 CONT 2 CONT One of the things that struck me the most was that she describes herself 2 CONT as a child who didn't really play. She wasn't creative and enjoyed 2 CONT helping in the kitchen more. That was true all her life. She had lots of 2 CONT brothers and uncles, then sons. A sign that hung in her house read "Men-y 2 CONT hands make light work" and she meant it, the boys cleaned house too. 2 CONT 2 CONT Treva met Perry Hoke at church. His wife died and he needed help with his 2 CONT two small children. Treva began to take care of the boys. They were 2 CONT married within the year. She was 17 and Perry was 26. From pictures, 2 CONT Grandma was quite a beauty. (My Aunt Rita resembles her in those 2 CONT pictures, however, Rita has aged very well and is one of the most 2 CONT beautiful women I know.) They began their little family and were doing ok 2 CONT when the Great Depression hit. Her uncle worked in a bank and arranged 2 CONT for Perry to repair repossessed houses. The family would live in the 2 CONT house while it was being repaired and then move to another when it was 2 CONT sold. I can't imagine trying to raise a family of six in a construction 2 CONT zone! They made it through and finally bought a place out on Wilimington 2 CONT Rd. 2 CONT 2 CONT When her youngest son, Edwin, started school, Treva went to work at a 2 CONT department store. She was working there when WWII began. A friend got her 2 CONT a job with General Motors on the assembly line. She continued to work 2 CONT there and was a supervisor at her retirement. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the mid-60's they sold the big house and got a smaller place a few 2 CONT blocks away in Patterson Park. (see Perry's notes for more info on family 2 CONT and location of houses). They lived exactly two blocks behind my house 2 CONT and I loved stopping by to visit. 2 CONT 2 CONT My Grandma loved history and so did I. She helped me with my homework. 2 CONT She also took us on rides after church to historic sites and Quaker 2 CONT towns. I also loved to read and she gave me several of her books. One was 2 CONT a children's book from 1880. That started my collection antique 2 CONT children's stories. I loved to be in the TV room. It had a wall of 2 CONT bookshelves. When I was little, I liked to play with her wooden 2 CONT elephants. Her Uncle Philip had been a missionary in India and gave her a 2 CONT black one with ivory tusks, eyes, and toenails. It started her 2 CONT collection. Over the years, she collected dishes and spoons. I don't do 2 CONT spoons, but I do have a set of antique china and several odd pieces. My 2 CONT family was considerate enough to give me the Black Elephant, a special 2 CONT dish, and all of her and Grandpa's school books, along with several other 2 CONT items after her death. I have also been given an antique mirror frame 2 CONT Grandma claims was carried by her Grandmother over the mountains from 2 CONT Virginia, the rocking chair my Grandfather, Father, and I were rocked in 2 CONT as babies, and a framed sketch of my Grandfather that hung in the TV room. 2 CONT 2 CONT As much as she loved family history, she told me she wished she had new 2 CONT furniture. When they were married, family members gave them pieces that 2 CONT had been in the family for years. She would buy a couch or chair but she 2 CONT always had the old pieces mixed in. I guess after 70 years I might get 2 CONT tired of the same stuff (not). I don't think my Aunts, Uncles, and 2 CONT Cousins will get too tired of it, and if you do, give it to me! 2 CONT 2 CONT By the time Kathy, Kris, Julie and I (the girls or us girls) came along, 2 CONT my Grandma was getting ready to retire. Her family was grown, the older 2 CONT grandkids were starting their own lives, and us girls loved her. We were 2 CONT spoiled by her. Every fall and spring, she would take us for a new 2 CONT outfit. Julie and Kathy were born in August, Kris in October, and I was 2 CONT born in September. They were our birthday presents. Really, they were our 2 CONT winter church outfits. We got the works. Hat, coat, dress, gloves, shoes, 2 CONT pocketbook and hanky. Julie matched Kris and I matched Kathy when it came 2 CONT to shoes, hats, and watches. But, as sisters, our dresses had to match, 2 CONT be the same pattern, different color, or compliment each other. Then in 2 CONT the Spring, we would get our Easter outfits. Easter was a big day, 2 CONT everybody had to get up and go to Grandma and Grandpa's church. Then we 2 CONT had a huge brunch together. My favorite part was going for a walk with 2 CONT the boys while the women cleaned the kitchen (maybe that's why I hate 2 CONT housework! I want to hang out with the boys!) 2 CONT 2 CONT Grandma's birthday was July 3. My Uncles would go together and drive 2 CONT across the river to Kentucky to get the good fireworks! We would meet at 2 CONT my Uncle J.D. and Aunt Sue's house. There would be a huge picnic, 2 CONT horseshoes, volleyball, and setting off firecrackers next door at the 2 CONT school. My older cousins stuffed Kris in the school mailbox each year to 2 CONT see if she still fit (until the year they blew the it up) They also set 2 CONT off strings of firecrackers and threw them down into the furnace room. 2 CONT Each year at the begining of school, we would get called into the office 2 CONT and questioned about what went on around there over the summer! Kids 2 CONT would come from around the neighborhood when it began to get dark. My 2 CONT Uncles would turn into pyromaniacs and we enjoyed the show! The song 2 CONT Saturday in the Park by Chicago takes me there. People laughing, people 2 CONT smiling, a real celebration! 2 CONT 2 CONT A week or two before Thanksgiving, Grandma would ask who wanted to ride 2 CONT to the Turkey farm. Sometimes I would ride along. Then I figured out that 2 CONT Grandma was actually picking out a Turkey to KILL and that I would be 2 CONT eating it. I quit going for a while. I got over it, but I be a city girl 2 CONT and my food comes from the grocery store, not the farm. 2 CONT 2 CONT Treva had a brother and two sisters that I remember well. Most of his childhood was spent with his 2 CONT parents on the farm. His home was the prudent, God-fearing household of a 2 CONT Pennsylvania Dutch family. All his life he was known as Eli, Eli was very 2 CONT conscientious and sensitive from childhood. 2 CONT One Sunday afternoon when he was a boy, his parents went to a Love Fest 2 CONT on a neighboring farm. With his brother George and some other boys they 2 CONT played croquet. They knew it would not meet the approval of our parents, 2 CONT but it did not bother the rest of the children. Suddenly, Eli became 2 CONT conscience smitten. He started walking in circles and praying in 2 CONT (Pennsylvania) Dutch, "Tell Mother to forgive me." The rest of the boys 2 CONT were now greatly concerned and it effectively stopped the sneaking game 2 CONT on that Sunday. 2 CONT As a youth he was devout and early in life he joined the Brethren in 2 CONT Christ church, later becoming a member of the Christian Brethren. At the 2 CONT age of 23, he married Sara Ann Heckman of Union, Ohio. They had three 2 CONT children, Perry, Chester, and Gracie. 2 CONT He was humble and patient and greatly respected and loved by all. He was 2 CONT fond of reading, especially the New Testament which he carried with him. 2 CONT He was deeply crushed by the death of his wife in 1918. This loss drew 2 CONT him closer to the Lord and he spent much time in reading and quoting 2 CONT Scripture and in prayer. 2 CONT In his latter years he was very ill and in the hospital. He was not 2 CONT expected to live. One day the man in the bed next to him became very ill. 2 CONT He had been an extremely profane fellow. Even though Eli was a very sick 2 CONT man himself and had a drainage tube in his side following his operation, 2 CONT he was so concerned about the spiritual welfare of the other man that he 2 CONT could scarcely be restrained from going to him. He wanted to go and pray 2 CONT for him. This illustrates the deep concern which he carried for the 2 CONT spiritual welfare of others. 2 CONT From the hospital he was taken to a rest home and later to the home of 2 CONT his daughter, Gracie, who cared for her Father until his death. 2 CONT He died on May 11, 1947 and is buried in Minnich Cemetery, 1 1/2 miles 2 CONT northwest of Union, Ohio. 0 @I108@ INDI 1 NAME Sara Ann /Heckman/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1871 1 DEAT 2 DATE 24 OCT 1918 2 PLAC Laura, Ohio 1 REFN 332 1 FAMS @F005@ 1 FAMC @F025@ 0 @I109@ INDI 1 NAME Amy Louise /Demotte/ 1 SEX F 1 REFN 333 1 FAMS @F023@ 0 @I110@ INDI 1 NAME Marjorie /Kruegar/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 PLAC Indian Lake, Ohio 1 REFN 334 1 FAMS @F007@ 0 @I111@ INDI 1 NAME Robert Melvin /Andrews/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE DEC 1925 2 PLAC Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio 1 REFN 335 1 FAMS @F021@ 1 NOTE Robert was the son of Samuel Andrews. James 2 CONT first settled in East Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania, but his 2 CONT place of birth has not been determined. Some accounts suggest he came 2 CONT from County Monaghan Ireland, and others say Yorkshire, England. The only 2 CONT records of James that have been found in Chester County were tax rolls, 2 CONT where he was listed between 1732, when he must have been at least 21 2 CONT years old, and 1740. He was most likely at least a nominal Quaker and 2 CONT followed the migration of other East Nottingham Quakers to the frontiers 2 CONT of Frederick County, Virginia. The first record of his purchasing land 2 CONT there was on 4 June 1745, when he acquired a 250 acre tract at the head 2 CONT of Yorkshireman's Creek from Giles and Sarah Chapman. The Chapmans were 2 CONT among the 70 original Quaker families that settled in the Shenandoah 2 CONT Valley and organized the Hopewell Friends Meeting. 2 CONT James Crumley eventually obtained much more land, including a large grant 2 CONT of 742 acres on Mill Creek (mostly in Berkeley County, now part of West 2 CONT Virginia) from Thomas, Sixth Lord Fairfax in 1752 His "home plantation" 2 CONT was on the Apple Pie Ridge, about a mile south of White Hall. The ridge 2 CONT is said to have been named for the delicious apple pies baked by the 2 CONT Quakers, and it is still covered with orchards 250 years later. There 2 CONT James conducted his business as a "cordwainer," dealing in Spanish 2 CONT leather goods. He purchased this land in 1748 from David and Barbara 2 CONT Gilkey. Very old family records from Richard Griffith, a prominent 2 CONT Frederick County genealogist, indicate that the Gilkeys may have been the 2 CONT parents of his wife Catharine, but no marriage documentation has been 2 CONT found. 2 CONT In a 1932 letter, Richard Griffith wrote, "James Crumley was a man of 2 CONT considerable wealth for his day and time, and his position an important 2 CONT one. He was the friend of Lord Fairfax, and there is evidence to show 2 CONT that he was a visitor at Greenway Court, and was entertained there at 2 CONT least twice, probably oftener." Greenway Court, the manor home of Lord 2 CONT Fairfax, was the seat of government of all of the Northern Neck of 2 CONT Virginia. 2 CONT James was one of three Quakers elected to the Vestry of Frederick Parish 2 CONT in 1752, indicating that he was considered a "most able and discreet 2 CONT person" as provided by the law. Although the Vestry was actually under 2 CONT the jurisdiction of the official Episcopal Church, it had political 2 CONT functions as well, and it was not unusual for Quakers to be members. The 2 CONT previous vestry had been dissolved amid charges of persecution of Quakers 2 CONT and failure to build a church with money provided by the House of 2 CONT Burgesses. Along with William Roberts, James Crumley was selected "church 2 CONT warden" in 1755 and 1756. He received 5 shillings, 4 1/2 pence 2 CONT reimbursement on 14 September 1758 for furnishing provisions to the 2 CONT colonial militia. 2 CONT Although the evidence suggests that James Crumley was indeed a man of 2 CONT wealth and position, a 1758 court record indicates that he did have a 2 CONT brush with the law. There was a legal proceeding against Barbara (Gilkey) 2 CONT Hagen, thought by some to be James Crumley's mother-in-law. The record 2 CONT immediately prior to this one stated simply that it was "ordered that the 2 CONT Sheriff take James Cromley into custody for behaving indecently before 2 CONT the court." In a 1936 letter, J. W. Baker, another Frederick County 2 CONT genealogist interpreted this behavior as evidence of some kind of family 2 CONT row. 2 CONT James Crumley's will was filed in 1757; it names five children - John, 2 CONT William, Mary, Henry, and Samuel, a granddaughter Ruth Doster , a brother 2 CONT Thomas, and, written in between the lines, a sister Joan. He died shortly 2 CONT before the will was proved 9 August 1764. The appraised value of his 2 CONT personal property was just over 500 pounds sterling. He was a 2 CONT slaveholder, as shown by his property inventory. One Negro man was valued 2 CONT at 65 pounds, a Negro woman and child at 55 pounds, and a Negro girl at 2 CONT 25 pounds. His widow Catherine was listed on county tax rolls in 1782 and 2 CONT 1787, and may have been living as late as 1799, as shown by an 1816 entry 2 CONT in the county deed book: "Received of Catharine Crumley by the hands of 2 CONT William Lynn fifteen Dollars and eighty Two Cents being the full amount 2 CONT of all Taxes and Damages due upon a Tract of land returned Delinquent in 2 CONT the name of the said Catharine Crumley for Taxes due thereon for the year 2 CONT 1799." 2 CONT James Crumley was living in Frederick County when George Washington won 2 CONT his first elective office as a Frederick County delegate to the Virginia 2 CONT House of Burgesses in July, 1758, so it possible that the two may have 2 CONT had some contact. Washington, however, did not actually live in Frederick 2 CONT County and did very little campaigning there, other than to buy plenty of 2 CONT liquor for the voters. There is at least a record of his writing James 2 CONT Crumley's name in his diary. After Washington received the Frederick 2 CONT County polling results, he made an alphabetic list of all the voters and 2 CONT their (public) choices.
