William Patterson
Feb 1815 - Feb 1900

DEATHS

William Patterson, an old and probably the best known resident of the western end of the county, died at the home of his son, William C. Patterson, of the 7th Ward, Friday evening of ailments caused by old age and removed from our midst a highly esteemed resident. He was a just and true man, an honorable and upright citizen, and had the respect of every acquaintance he had ever made. He was a conscientious and consistent in all his dealings and leaves a reputation that his children can look to with pride. Mr. Patterson was an intelligent man, a stanch and zealous Democrat and a member of U. P. church. Early in his manhood he taught school but for many years gave his sole lamentation to his farm which he managed successfully. He was born on the homestead south of Mount Jackson, in North Beaver Twp. on February 25, 1815, and would have completed his 85th year had he loved less than a month longer. He came of a most prominent pioneer family, his father being John Patterson, who moved to the old homestead from near Baltimore, MD in 1801. He was married to Miss Mary Clendenin daughter of John Clendenin of Cumberland County, PA and when they moved to this county there were but a few inhabitants in the county. William Patterson was married to Miss Elizabeth Buchanan, this union resulted in the birth of three children: Walter B. Patterson of Hickory Twp.; J. D. Patterson of 7th ward, and Mary E. Patterson who died some years ago. His second wife was Miss Jane Hopper, this union was blessed with two children William C. Patterson of 7th Ward and Eunice at home. Mr Patterson had brothers as follows, Samuel, father of William Patterson the well known banker; Major James Patterson once county commissioner and sisters, Mrs Blackburn and Miss Jane. All the family are now dead. John Patterson the father, had a sister who resides in Bordentown, New Jersey. The funeral services which were held Monday afternoon, were attended by many friends. Interment was made in U. P. cemetery near Mount Jackson.
