Death Call a Veteran

Samuel R. Kelley, 79 years old dies at home here Thursday

Samuel R. Kelley, Civil War veteran and well known citizen, died at his home, 309 Grant Street at 7:10 Thursday evening of heart trouble, and a paralytic stroke. His death brings sorrow to a host of friends. He was 79 years of age, having been born June 26, 1838. He was a native of Slippery Rock and was a son of Samuel and Eliza (McKee) Kelley, both of whom preceded him in death. For the past 47 years, Mr. Kelley had made his home in this city, and as long as his health permitted, followed his occupation as carpenter. During the Civil War he served as a member of Company I, 103rd regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted for three years or during the war?, and served until honorably discharged because of disability. He was a Republican in politics and was always interested in civic affairs. A man who stood for the things that make for righteousness, the cause of temperance lay close to his heart. He was a consistent member of the First United Presbyterian Church of this city. A kind husband and father, an obliging neighbor and a good citizen has gone from our midst, and will be missed by a large circle of friends. He was a member of the A.O.U.U. lodge. Mr. Kelley was married 46 years ago to Miss Mary McCracken, who survives him, with the following children: J. Howard Kelley, of Kane, Pa., W. McKee Kelley, of Pittsburg, Mrs. Oliver Moore of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. William Jenkins, Vernon B., and Florence M., of this city. Four children, Elmer E., Samuel I., S. Elizabeth and Fergus Melville, preceded him in death. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters; Mrs. Jane Shira, of Parkerslanding, Pa., Mrs. M. A. Kreecorian of Farnam, Neb., J. C. Kelley, of Butler, Pa., and William Kelley, of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The funeral services will be held Saturday at the family residence. Dr. R. L. Lanning officiating. An invitation is extended to all members of the G. A. R and other comrades.

Pallbearers were C.C. Horner, frank Geiger, S.S. Smith, Scott McCleary, Steve Marshall and John Preston

Interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery.
