JOHN CATTERSON, OLD SOLDIER DIES

After an Illness of Several Months, a Civil War Veteran of the Eastside Died Today

After an illness of several months, John Catterson passed away peacefully Friday morning at 4:10 o'clock, at his residence, 720 Cumberaland avenue. He had been ill over a year, suffering from a complication of diseases. Although suffering intense pain, he displayed the greatest Christian fortitude, and waited patiently for the summons to his eternal rest.

He had been a member of the Epworth Methodist church for years, and was an active member in the congregation.

Mr. Catterson was a veteran of the Civil war, and suffered a great many hardships during the conflict. He was enlisted at Homewood, Beaver county, Pa., August 25, 1861, at the age of 18 years, in Company C, 101st Pennsylvania V.I.; was promoted to corporal while in service. He was in the hospital at Harrisburg about three months in 1862 as provost guard at White Oak Swamp; veteraned at Plymouth, N.C. January 1, 186, __ the same company; participated in the battle of the siege of Yorktown, Bottom Bridge, Fair Oakes, Malvern Hills, the Seven Days battle before Richmond, Kingstown, Whitehall, Goldsboro and Plymouth, at which time he was taken prisoner, April 20, 1864, by General Hoke's men, held at Andersonville six months, at Florence five months, paroled and sent to Annapolis, Md.; furloughed from Annapolis 30 days in March, 1865; furlough extended 30 days at the expiration of which time, he rejoined his command at Harrisburg in May following, and was discharged at Newbern, N.C., by S.O. No. 88, June 25, 1865.

Mr. Catterson was born at Slippery Rock, this county, July 11 1844, and was 65 years, 11 months and 26 days of age. He moved to New Castle in the year 1893, and had since resided here. He was married in 1865.

He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. George Cameron of Mercer, Samuel Catterson of New Wilmington, Mrs. James Caldwell, Mrs. Ollie Tindall, Mrs. John Gaston of New Castle, Mrs. Charles Eckles of Shenango township, William Catterson of Sharon, and Thomas Catterson of Youngstown. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Ada and Ida Catterson, two sisters, Mrs. Elijah Newton and Mrs. Samuel Kennedy.

The funeral services will be conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. C. Weaver. They will be held at the family home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, a short service at the house, and the funeral service at Savannah church
