Anna B. ROBINSON ( -1866)

DEATHS

ROBINSON— In George’s township, Fayette County, Pa., Dec. 24th 1865, of Consumption, Miss ANNA B. ROBINSON, aged 25 years. The deceased, for the last seven years, was a member of the family of her uncle, the late Dr. Fairchild. On March 2nd, 1860, she made a profession of religion in the Presbyterian Church, of George’s Creek; where her pious parents had, in faith and love, consecrated her in infancy, by prayer and baptism, to the service of their covenant God. The vows which she voluntarily assumed, were conscientiously kept; and at death, we doubt not, her gentle and loving spirit was carried by angels to Abraham’s bosom; there to dwell with a sainted mother long in glory, and with a beloved sister who only five months ago entered into rest. TERRIFIC EXPLOSION WRECKS
FAIRCHANCE POWDER MILL AND
THREE MEN ARE BLOWN TO BITS

Plant of the DuPont Company
Is Badly Damaged by Blasts.

FOUR MILLS GONE, IS STORY

Plant is Located Up White Rocks Hollow,
Some Distance from Fairchance;
Telephonic Communication
Cut Off; First Reports are Meager.

Three men lost their lives this afternoon in an explosion which wrecked the Fairchance powder mill of E. L. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Because of the remote location of the plant and the fact that the explosion tore down the telephone lines reaching it, details are meager. In Fairchance it was reported that four mills had blown up. Other stories were to effect that the press mill and charge house were demolished in two separate explosions.

The victims of the explosion were John Robinson, 51, married, Fairchance: William Cox, 35, married, Georges township; John Brock, 28, an Italian. Twenty men were in the shift when the explosion occurred. None were injured. The victims apparently were blown to atoms for nothing has been found of their remains but one foot. They were alone in the press mill. The press, corning and wheel mills all let go. The cause is unknown.

The plant is located up the White Rocks hollow, about two miles from Fairchance, and in an inaccessible portion of the mountains. The mill was built there following the Rand explosion of 1906. The plant is engaged in the manufacture of blasting powder, used in the mines. No explosives for munitions are manufactured. The shock of the explosion was plainly felt in Uniontown, some six miles away. Persons said it approached in violence the blast which wrecked the Rand plant.

HEADS NOT FOUND

Plant is Located Up White Rocks Hollow,
Partial Remains of Explosion Victims
Laid at Rest Today.

The grewsome task of searching the ruins of the three mills of the du Pont Powder Company at Oliphant for remnants of the bodies of three men killed in the explosion Monday afternoon ended with the heads of the victims still missing. The three men were of different sizes consequently the work of identifying the remains was not hard. No trace of the heads was found, however. The body of William Cox was shipped to West Virginia last night. The funerals of John Robinson and John Brock were held from their homes in Fairchance this afternoon. It was discovered yesterday that a mule which hauled a truck between the corning mill and the press mill was hurled 40 feet away by the force of the explosion and killed.

Thomas ROBINSONPhoto  (1817-1909)

Thomas Robinson Dies Near Outcrop
Was Nearly 93 Years of Age,
Being One of Fayette County’s Oldest Men.

61 Years of Married Life

Neither He Nor His Wife Had Ever
Been 100 Miles Away From Where
They Died – Their Descendants Number 58

Outcrop, Sept. 2 — After an active life extending over more than 92 years, Thomas Robinson passed away at 9 o’clock Wednesday night, Sept. 1, 1909, at the home of his son Henry in Springhill township, near this place. He had enjoyed good health and been in possession of his faculties in old age up to about nine days ago when he was taken ill with dysentery after which he was confined to his bed until his death.

Mr. Robinson was born March 29, 1817, on the old National pike in Somerset county and his parents were James Robinson and Martha McMullen, both of Irish descent. When a youth of less than 20 years Thomas broke and hauled stone on the pike between Farmington and Somerfield and in 1835 he worked on the pike at Monroe’s Spring near Fort Necessity. He remembered when Gen. LaFayette visited Fayette county May 26, 1825. Mr. Robinson’s first vote was cast for William Henry Harrison in 1840 and he was a Whig and Republican all his life.

On September 25, 1845, Mr. Robinson married Miss Harriet Hayden and their married life extended over a period of nearly 61 years until her death September 10, 1906. They were married at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hayden, by Rev. Thomas Nesmith, M. E. minister and also justice of the peace. They went to housekeeping on a rented place and Mr. Robinson later bought a farm.

During their six decades and more of married life this couple were not separated more than one day and night at any one time and it was very seldom that either one was away from home that long. Neither of them was ever as far as 100 miles away from the place where they died. Mr. Robinson, during his lifetime had never been to Pittsburg and had never ridden on a street car and very seldom on a train. He was given an automobile ride once by J. V. Thompson. Mr. Robinson had been in only three states, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland.

Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Robinson and four are living. Henry Robinson and Mrs. Martha Collins, Springhill township; Mrs. Sarah Smiley and Mrs. Elizabeth Conn, Georges township. The other descendants of this old couple are 26 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren, the descendants numbering in all 58. Mr. Robinson was the last survivor of a family of seven.

Funeral Friday at 12:30 p.m. from the home.

We feel that his passing both to the church and to the entire community has suffered an irreparable loss. But we will not grieve intemperately; we will place our hand in God's hand and say, "Thy will, not our's be done," for what is our loss is heaven's gain.

bullet Eleanor RODDY died in 1863. Her obit was contributed to the Fayette County USGenWeb Project.(4)

RODDY - In the same place ( Petersburg, Somerset county, Pa., ) on the 24th September, 1863, Mrs. Eleanor Roddy, in the 73rd year of her age. The deceased, who was the daughter of John Rooney and Anne Mulholland, was born near the town of Seaford, in the county of Down, Ireland. Thence she moved to Baltimore in 1801, where she was married to James Roddy in 1808. She removed with him to Somerset county, where she remained until the time of her death. She was universally loved whilst living and lamented when dead on account of her unwearying attentions to the sick and afflicted, which caused her to be looked upon as a mother by the entire community among where she lived. Descended from pious Catholic ancestors, she preserved her faith whilst living in a region for many years unvisited by the clergy, and yet lived and died in a Protestant community, without an enemy. Her death, though sudden, was not unprovided, since on the very day she was attacked by her last illness, she approached the sacraments with great devotion. As a mother, her worth was best proven by the grief of her children, which testified that they had met in her death an irreparable loss.
May they rest in peace.

Joseph S. RODDY ( -1854)

DIED

In Addison, Somerset county, Pa., on Tuesday morning, 25th July, of Bronchitis, JOSEPH S. RODDY, in the 24th year of his age. The subject of this brief sketch was a native of Somerset county, but for some years a resident of Fayette, where the disease which has so fatally terminated was contracted. A few days before his death he started to visit his friends in Somerset, but nature struggled in vain against the might of disease; he was forced to return, and laid upon the bed from which he never rose again. Young, gay, and spirited, warm- hearted, full of generous impulses, could the blessings of hundreds ward off Death’s fatal dart, he would not thus have died; but affection, friendship, esteem, alike were powerless to save, and only as a holy balm of consolation to the bereaved friends can they be felt. We mourn the early dead, and those not full of years who are called to their rest, in the blindness of our mortality we weep as martyrs. Oh! who would not thus wish to die, to calmly sink to rest, and leave behind a world of care, a universe of woe, before the pure and ardent feelings and affections of youth are blighted by the chilling touch of adversity; before commerce with the hard, cold world has rooted out the good, and sown the bramble seeds of sin in the rich soil of a virtuous heart, before our hopes and delights are bonded: “To woe’s wide empire, where deep troubles toss, Loud sorrows howl, envenomed passion bite; Ravenous calamities our vitals __eze, And threatening fate wide opens to devour.” He was buried on Wednesday, by Addison Division, No. 454, Sons of Temperance, of which order he had long been a useful and consistent member.

Two Children Killed by Train Near W. Brownsville
SEVERAL OTHER YOUNGSTERS IN LEAP TO SAFETY

Annie Romen, 4, and Mary Roen, 7, Victims of Tragedy
WALK ON TRACKS

Annie Romen, aged 4, and Mary Romen, aged 7, step-children of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Kornuta, of Diamond Works, near Brownsville, were instantly killed Sunday afternoon at 5:15 o’clock, when struck by a fast Pennsylvania passenger train near West Brownsville. The two children, accompanied by their parents and several other children were walking the tracks near their home, going toward West Brownsville station when the accident occurred. Hearing the approach of the train the remainder of the party jumped clear of the tracks but the two children kept running in front, evidently not hearing the train. Seeing the children still on the tracks the engineer of the train is reported to have blown the whistle, which went unnoticed by the two children. Both girls were struck by the pilot of the engine, which, although slowing down for the West Brownsville stop, was going at a fair rate of speed. They were knocked clear of the tracks, Mary, the oldest being instantly killed, while Annie, died a few minutes afterward. After hitting the girls the train was brought to a stop within a length of itself. Bodies of the two girls were removed to the Kisinger mortuary at Brownsville to be prepared for burial

Odessa ROSE ( -1927)

MISS ODESSA ROSE

The funeral of Miss Odessa Rose of Masontown which was held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Brethren church was attended by hundreds from Masontown and many parts of Fayette and Greene counties who came to pay their last respects to the memory of one who was the friend to all who knew her. For three days, during which the body of Miss Rose lay at her late home on Washington street, there was a constant stream of friends from all walks of life who passed the bier and tarried a moment to tell of some deed of kindness she had done. Miss Rose was one of the most popular girls in her community. For a number of years she had been in the employ of the Masontown Pharmacy, where she had endeared herself by her courtesy and kindness to scores of persons. The esteem in which she was held was attested by the many floral offerings which completely surrounded the casket and filled the parlors of the Rose home. At the Brethren church, friends of Miss Rose overflowed the main auditorium and large numbers were obliged to stand outside on the church lawn. The services were in charge of the pastor assisted by the Rev. Mr. Shively, a former Masontown minister, but now of Ashland, O. Her favorite hymns were sung by a trio comprising the Misses Anna and Minnie McWilliams and Mrs. Robert H. Smith, and the body was laid to rest in the Brethren cemetery adjoining the church.

bullet Edna Rosenberg ROSENBAUM died in 1937. Her obit was contributed to the Fayette County USGenWeb Project.(2)

Mrs. Edna Rosenberg Rosenbaum, widow of Ivan Rosenbaum, died Friday evening, April 30, 1937, at her home in Pittsburgh after a six weeks' illness which followed a cerebral hemorrhage.  She failed to rally after first being stricken and sank steadily until the end came quietly last evening with members of her family at her bedside.
Mrs. Rosenbaum lived here for many years while her husband was associated with the firm of Rosenbaum brothers.  She and Mr. Rosenbaum left here a few years ago and in an automobile accident in Arizona in September of 1935 Mr. Rosenbaum was instantly killed.  It is also believed that injuries received at that time by Mrs. Rosenbaum may have led indirectly to the trouble which caused her death.  Her father, Herman Rosenberg, who died suddenly last week was buried last Thursday.  She was not aware of his death.
Surviving are two children, Miss Betty Rosenbaum and Buddy Rosenbaum, at home; her mother, Mrs. Herman Rosenberg, four brothers and one sister, Andrew, Julius, Alex and Dr. Nick Rosenberg and Mrs. Ella Goldsmith, all residents of Pittsburgh.
There will be brief services in the family residence in Pittsburgh Sunday morning and the body will then be brought to the Johnston Funeral chapel here.  Friends will be received between the hours of noon and 2 o'clock when the services will be held in charge of Rabbi Samuel Glassner, of Temple Israel.

Burial will be in the family plot in the Jewish cemetery, Hopwood.
