Kuhns, a freshman at Otterbein College at Westerville, Ohio, had been suffering from nose bleeding and came home a week ago to receive treatment from a doctor here. The physician had told him Friday that he was in good shape again and the young man prepared to return to college this morning. Marjorie Fox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Fox of East Washington avenue, had been home to undergo a tonsil operation and she was to go back to school, accompanied by Kuhns, and her two brothers, William and Donald.

Kuhns went to visit his grandfather, Harry L. Krepps, at Iron Bridge, formerly of Connellsville, Friday evening and was returning to his home when the mishap occurred on Mount Pleasant-Connellsville highway, just at the top of Pennsville hill. Krepps was traveling toward Connellsville and the McCoy car in the direction of Mount Pleasant. Both machines were damaged. Kuhns’ head was thrown through the windshield and his body struck the steering wheel solidly in the accident. Kuhns was the son of Harry C. and Corene Krepps Kuhns, who had lived in Connellsville until two years ago when they moved to Uniontown. The young man, however, had continued his studies at Connellsville High School and was graduated last June. He then enrolled in September at Otterbein. He is survived by his parents and his grandfather. He was the only child. The Kuhns formerly resided at 120 Walnut street. The father has been employed on a bookbinding project in the Ella Peach school building at Uniontown. Deputy Coroner Milton V. Munk, after a preliminary examination, said that death probably was caused by shock, loss of blood and internal injuries. State Motor Policeman G. W. McGuire is making the investigation of the crash. The body was removed to the funeral parlors of Clyde B. Brooks at Indian Head, where it was prepared for burial. Later it was taken to the home of the grandfather at Iron Bridge. The body will be removed on Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock to the First United Brethren Church in Connellsville, where the funeral service will be conducted at 2 o’clock. Rev. Elmer A. Schultz, pastor, will officiate.

Crippled College Student
Is Victim of Motor Wreck

Last rites for Darl Kuhns, aged 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kuhns, of 120 Walnut street, fatally injured in an automobile collision on the old Connellsville-Mr. Pleasant highway late Friday night, October 8, 1937, will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon in the United Brethren church in Connellsville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body may be viewed in the church from 10 o’clock Tuesday morning until time of the services.

Kuhn was killed when his automobile and one driven by Ernest McCoy, 21, of Connellsville crashed headon. The victim suffered internal injuries. McCoy, who resides in 1216 Chestnut street, Connellsville, was given emergency treatment at the hospital for cuts on the left side of the head. He went home later. Darl, a semi-invalid, due to infantile paralysis earlier in life, had been to Iron Bridge visiting at the home of his grandfather, H. L. Krepps. He was on his way home alone when near the Kiefertown intersection, two miles from Scottdale, the crash occurred. Both machines were badly damaged. In the machine with McCoy were William Reynolds and Jack Zimmerman, also of Connellsville. Trooper T. W. McGuire, investigating the fatality, learned the Kuhns car had pulled almost off its side of the highway in an unsuccessful effort to avert a collision. The machines sideswiped, that driven by Kuhns being badly smashed along the side and front. McCoy, under questioning, admitted he and his companions had drunk “several bottles of beer” before proceeding out the highway to the point where the accident occurred. No arrests have been made in the case by the police. The Kuhns family moved to Uniontown two years ago from Connellsville where Mr. Kuhns for years had conducted a grocery store in Crawford avenue. At present he was engaged in a book binding project in the Ella Peach school building. Only the parents survive. Darl was a student in Otterbein college but had come home for treatment. He was a graduate of the Connellsville high school.

State Motor Police are holding Russell Lowry of Dunbar, who they picked up shortly after midnight and who they say was the driver of the death car. Lowry, in his early statements to the police could not recall hitting the victim. After striking Kurek the auto is said to have continued along the highway but collided with a second car, knocking off the fender which contained the license plate. After obtaining the number of the plate police located Lowry at his home in Dunbar. He never stopped, they maintain. The body was taken to the funeral parlors of James T. Burhans at Dunbar.

Fayette Man Charged With Manslaughter In Fatal Crash

A Fayette County man killed his friend of more than 20 years when he pulled the emergency brake on the car both were riding in, causing the car to flip onto its roof Tuesday morning, police said. Emmett Cooke, 48, of Memory Lane, Dunbar, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment in the death of his friend, Terry Kurosky, 49, of Brushwood Road, Uniontown. State police at the Uniontown barracks said Cooke and Kurosky were passengers in a car driven by Robert Leroy Keefer, 31, also of Memory Lane, Dunbar, when the accident occurred just before 6 a.m. on Jumonville Road in North Union. Cooke was in the front passenger seat while Kurosky sat in the back of the 1990 Chevrolet Cavalier. Police said all three were employed by Golden Eagle Construction and were headed to a road paving job site. Cooke pulled up on the emergency brake lever, causing Keefer to lose control of his car, police said. The vehicle struck an embankment and rolled onto its roof. Police said Kurosky was ejected through the back window. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Deputy Coroner Paul Kondrla. Cooke, during an interview with police, said he and Kurosky had been friends for more than 20 years. He said they commonly joked with one another and had pulled the emergency brake while the other was driving in the past. Cooke told police he and Kurosky were "messing around" and admitted he pulled the emergency brake yesterday morning, causing the accident, police said. Cooke was arraigned before District Judge Wendy Dennis and released on $50,000 unsecured bond.

The Daily Courier, Connellsville, PA, Tuesday, May 8, 2007

1 Man Killed In Accident Involving Prank

Police said a Uniontown man is dead, the result of "joking around" between a front-seat passenger and the driver. Terry Kurosky, 49, of Uniontown, was pronounced dead at 5:53 a.m. Tuesday, following a one-vehicle accident along Jumonville Road, approximately 1/4-mile north of Klink's Road in North Union Township. Kurosky was one of three men in the vehicle.

Police said Robert Leroy Keefer, 31, of Dunbar, was operating the 1990 Chevrolet Cavalier coupe. Emmett Cooke, 48, of Dunbar, was a passenger. All three are employees of Golden Eagle Construction and were headed to a paving job. Police said Cooke was a passenger in the front seat. Kurosky was seated in the back. The accident occurred when Cook pulled the emergency brake, which caused Keefer to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle struck an embankment and rolled onto its roof.

Police said Kurosky was ejected out the back window. Cooke and Keefer were able to exit the vehicle through the passenger side of the vehicle. The Fayette County Coroner's Office pronounced Kurosky dead as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.

Cooke, in an interview with police, said he and Kurosky had been friends for more than 20 years. He said it was common practice for them to joke around. He said they have pulled the emergency brake while the other was driving on other occasions. Cooke was charged with involuntary manslaughter and one count of recklessly endangering another person. He was arraigned at District Judge Wendy Dennis' office and released on $50,000 unsecured bond.

Dunbar Man Held For Trial

A Dunbar man accused of causing the car wreck that killed his friend of more than 20 years will face a charge of involuntary manslaughter in Fayette County Court. Emmett Cooke, 48, of Memory Lane, pulled the car's emergency brake from the passenger seat as he and two of his co-workers were driving to a job site May 8, causing the car to flip onto its roof and crush Terry Kurosky, 49, of Brushwood Road, Uniontown, state police allege.

Police said Cooke and Kurosky were passengers in the car driven by Robert Leroy Keefer, 31, also of Memory Lane, when the crash occurred just before 6 a.m. on Jumonville Road in North Union. Cooke was in the front passenger seat, while Kurosky sat in the back of the 1990 Chevrolet Cavalier. Police said all three were employed by Golden Eagle Construction, of Uniontown, and were headed to a road-paving job. Cooke pulled up on the emergency brake lever, causing Keefer to lose control of his car, police said. The vehicle struck an embankment and rolled onto its roof.

Cooke and Kurosky "were like brothers," according to Keefer's testimony Wednesday at a preliminary hearing before North Union District Judge Wendy Dennis. "It was Terry and Emmett goofing around as usual," said Keefer, who is about to be married to Cooke's daughter. "Terry was pulling on Emmett's ear or hair, or something. Sometime at that point, Emmett pulled the emergency brake." Keefer said he didn't see Cooke engage the emergency brake, "but I know he did." Police said Kurosky was thrown through the back window.

Keefer testified that Kurosky had pulled the emergency brake three to four times in the past few months as the trio traveled to work. "He (Kurosky) has pulled the emergency brake from the rear of the car in the past," Keefer said. Defense attorney Sam Davis tried to argue that Cooke did not exhibit reckless or negligent behavior, and the case did not warrant a charge of involuntary manslaughter.

"Nine out of 10 times, one could argue that pulling the emergency brake while a vehicle is in motion is grossly negligent," Davis said. "But look at the facts in this case. At least three or four times in the defendant's experience, nothing happened." Dennis remanded the charges to the Court of Common Pleas. Cooke remains free on $50,000 unsecured bond.

Statements Of Dunbar Man Charged In Fatal Crash Won't Be Suppressed

A Fayette County judge Tuesday denied the request of a Dunbar man to suppress statements he made after he was arrested in a car accident that killed a friend more than a year ago. Emmett Cooke, 49, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment in the May 8, 2007, accident that killed Terry Kurosky, 49, of Uniontown.

According to testimony at Cooke's preliminary hearing by the car's driver, Robert Leroy Keefer of Dunbar, the accident occurred as the three headed to a construction job site where they were all employed. Cooke was in the front passenger seat, while Kurosky sat in the back of the 1990 Chevrolet Cavalier. Cooke pulled up on the emergency brake lever, causing Keefer to lose control, police said. The vehicle then struck an embankment and rolled onto its roof. Police said Kurosky was thrown through the back window. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A ruling yesterday by Judge Ralph Warman was based upon the preliminary hearing transcript. Accident reconstructionist Cpl. Joseph D'Andrea, of the state police in Uniontown, determined that the Cavalier was traveling 48 mph at the time that the emergency brake was applied. Interviewed by state police after the accident, Cooke indicated that Kurosky pulled on his hair. Cooke then reached down and pulled up on the emergency brake.

"We find that the application of the emergency brake on a vehicle traveling at a speed of 48 mph constitutes reckless conduct, i.e., conduct which disregards a substantial and unjustifiable risk that an accident may be caused with resultant injury or death," Warman wrote. "Having concluded that the occurrence of a criminal act has been established by a preponderance of the evidence through the independent evidence presented at the preliminary and omnibus pretrial hearings," the opinion stated, "the defendant's motion to exclude his oral and written statements is denied." Cooke also contested the evidence presented at the preliminary hearing. Warman's opinion noted that the "preliminary hearing serves a limited function and credibility of witnesses is not an issue at this hearing."

Evidence presented at both hearings, the opinion stated, was sufficient to establish that Kurosky died in an accident caused through the "reckless conduct of someone applying" the emergency brake while the vehicle was in motion. Cooke's own statements to police that he "pulled the parking brake up a little bit" and that "it locked up" can be considered, the opinion said.

Dunbar Township Man Will Serve Jail Time for Fatal Prank

A prank between two friends in Fayette County cost one man his life and will send the other to jail for up to 18 months. Emmett "Boone" Cooke, 50, of 194 Memory Lane, Dunbar Township, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment in the May 7, 2007, death of Terry Kurosky, 49, of Uniontown.

Kurosky died when the Chevrolet Cavalier in which he was riding crashed on Jumonville Road in North Union. State police at Uniontown said the driver, Robert L. Keefer, 33, of Dunbar, lost control of the car when Cooke pulled on the emergency brake. Cooke on Monday entered a general plea of no contest to the charges. A plea of no contest is not an admission of guilt, but it is treated as such for sentencing purposes. In an investigative report, police said Cooke told them he and Kurosky had been friends and co-workers at Golden Eagle Construction for more than 20 years.

The two enjoyed joking around with one another, Cooke told police, with one joke involving one of the men pulling on the emergency brake while the other was driving. According to the report, Cooke told investigators the two had pulled the prank numerous times over the year leading up to the accident, "and nothing happened." Cooke told police that on the morning of the accident, he, Kurosky and Keefer were headed to work when he and Kurosky "started teasing one another, and he told Kurosky he was going to eject him." Police said Cooke told them Kurosky was tugging on his hair when he pulled on the emergency brake. Keefer lost control when the brakes locked up, according to police, sending the car off the road and onto its roof. Kurosky was thrown through the back window. He was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt-force trauma to the head. Cooke told one of the troopers at the scene that he "killed his best buddy," according to court records. According to court records filed at the time Cooke entered the plea, he faces three to 18 months in jail when he is sentenced Feb. 17 before Leskinen.

The Daily Courier, Connellsville, PA, Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Fayette Man Will Serve Jail Sentence On Weekends

A Fayette County man who pulled the emergency brake on a moving vehicle, causing a crash that killed his best friend, will serve a three- to six-month jail sentence on weekends. Emmett "Boone" Cooke, 50, of 149 Memory Lane, Dunbar Township, entered pleas of no contest to involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment in the May 7, 2007 death of Terry Kurosky, 49, of Uniontown. Kurosky was a passenger in a Chevrolet Cavalier that crashed on Jumonville Road in North Union. Driver Robert L. Keefer, 33, of Dunbar, lost control of the car when Cooke pulled the emergency brake, state police said.

Judge Steve Leskinen on Tuesday sentenced Cooke to three to six months in the county jail, but he ordered the time to be served on consecutive weekends. Cooke will not have to report to jail until he is medically cleared from recent open-heart surgery. Attorney Sam Davis said Cooke is remorseful. "Mr. Kurosky was his best friend on this earth," Davis said. "He's certainly sorry to his family and to all who have lost here."

Davis said he believes Cooke's heart problems may stem from his remorse over the accident. Davis said Cooke had the surgery four weeks ago, after he entered the pleas of no contest. Davis said Cook has lost 125 pounds since the accident and learned last month he has a mass on one kidney. "I'm not a doctor, but the stress of this has taken its toll," Davis said. Davis said although he advised Cooke to take his case before a jury, Cooke opted to enter the general pleas to spare Kurosky's family a trial. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but it is treated as such for sentencing purposes.

No one from Kurosky's family spoke at sentencing, but District Attorney Nancy Vernon said two of Kurosky's siblings wanted Cooke to serve jail time. "Although the deceased, their brother, and the defendant were very good friends, they are still suffering a great loss," Vernon said. "They believe he should go to jail because they feel it would give him time to contemplate what occurred, and give some value to the life of their brother."

Leskinen said testimony from previous hearings indicated Cooke might have believed the emergency brake was broken. The judge pointed out that although the two friends had pulled the prank on each other previously with no bad results, Cooke's actions were reckless because someone might have repaired the brake. "Even with the thought that it's a nonfunctional emergency brake, it's unjustifiable," Leskinen said. "It's not a prank that would ever be a good thing."

Some two dozen of Cooke's friends and family were in the courtroom. Leskinen noted he had received 60 letters from individuals that were "universally positive" in support of Cooke. In addition to jail, Cooke was ordered to serve 36 months on intermediate punishment, with nine months on house arrest with electronic monitoring.

Although in failing health for some time, his condition did not become serious until four months ago. He had undergone an operation at the Baltimore hospital Wednesday a week ago and had been showing signs of convalescence when he suffered a relapse, believed to be due to heart failure, and his two children were summoned by Mrs. Kurtz who was at the bedside. Mr. Kurtz had been troubled with gall bladder and kidney conditions. Albert Braden Kurtz was born in Connellsville on December 22, 1870, the son of the late Joseph M. and Martha Jane Cope Kurtz. Kurtz came to Connellsville to stay with his mother and 35 years ago he went into the jewelry business in the Stader building at the corner of West Crawford avenue and South Meadow lane where his store was connected at the present time. Emma A. KURTZ (1844-1924)

Mrs. Emma Kurtz
Dies Peacefully
After Relapse

Suffering a relapse of an illness that followed her return from the South this spring, Mrs. Emma A. Kurtz, 80 years old, one of the city's best known women, died at her home in Race street at 9:55 o'clock Sunday night. The relapse occurred on May 25 and since that time has gradually weakened. Until her death however, she remained conscious. Mrs. Kurtz was one of Connellsville's most highly respected women. She was the daughter of the late Jonathan and Mary Enos and was born on November 26, 1844, in the old Enos homestead in East Crawford avenue, now occupied by Dr. J.D. Jackson. She married Henry Kurtz on December 17, 1868, He was one of Connellsville's most prominent citizens. His death occurred on December 11, 1918. Four children, three whom survive, were born to this union. They are James L., cashier of the Citizens National Bank: Arthur E., deputy prothonotary of Fayette County, and J. Fred, a coal and coke operator, all of this city. One sister Mrs. Mary E. Taggert of Big Stone Gap, W. Va., and one brother, E.J. Enos, of this city, together with four grandchildren and one great grandchild, also survive. All members of the family, with the exception of a son, J. Fred, where at her bedside when death came. Fred Kurtz, who is in Chicago, Ill. could not be here because of his health. His condition will not permit him to come for the funeral. Mrs. Kurtz was a devout member of the Christian Church of this city. She united with the church in her girlhood days and remained with it throughout her life. She took great interest in all church affairs until a few years ago when an injury prevented further active participation. She was a charter member of the Ladies Circle of the G.A.R., and was very much interested in that organization until her injury also caused a suspension of activities. Following six weeks in the Uniontown Hospital last fall for observation and treatment she left the institution greatly improved. In company with her son J. Fred, she went to Orlando, Fla., to spend the winter. She returned this spring, stopping at Chattanooga, Tenn., to visit a grand-daughter, Mrs. E.H. Ralston. The fatigue of the long trip made it necessary for her to re-enter a hospital on her return and she apparently made progress. A daughter-in-law Mrs. J. L. Kurtz, went there and accompanied her home. She withstood the trip and seemingly had regained her former health. The funeral will be on Wednesday. A brief service will be held at the Kurtz home in Race street followed by a service at 3:30 o'clock in the Christian Church, with Rev. George Walker Buckner, the pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Hill Grove Cemetery.

James L. KURTZ (1869-1936)

DEATH CLOSES
ACTIVE CAREER
OF J. L. KURTZ

Well-Known Citizen Dies at
Hospital After Valiant
Fight for Life

CONNECTED WITH
BANKS 30 YEARS.

James L. Kurtz, a lifelong resident of Connellsville and identified with banking circles for three decades, died at 8:40 o'clock this morning at Connellsville State Hospital where he had undergone an operation two weeks ago. Mr. Kurtz, who on Thursday, the date of his burial, would of become 67 years of age, was taken ill on Friday, August 28, at his home on 365 East Green street and two weeks later was removed to the hospital. Death was attributed to complications. James Louis Kurtz was born on October 15, 1869 in Connellsville at the home of his parents, Henry and Emma Enos Kurtz, who resided in West Crawford avenue on the site of the present McKenna shoe store. He attended the Connellsville High School and in 1887 went to Leisenring No. 1 where he was employed as a chief clerk for 10 years. During that time, however a strike swept the region and he was furloughed for a year. He felt that he wanted to be a minister and went to Bethany College. His attendance there caused him to believe that his talents were not intended for the ministry and that he could do as much in line of business. In 1897 he was chosen chief clerk of the Virginia Coal and Coke Company of Stonega, Va. In June of that year Mr. Kurtz returned to Connellsville and was united in marriage to Miss Mary Florence Wolfe, daughter of Lewis Whetzel and Malinda Casteal Wolfe by Rev. W.A. Edie at the First Presbyterian Church on June 24. Mr. Kurtz resigned his Virginia position, coming North in the fall of 1897 to enter the grocery business with his uncle E.J. Enos, on East Crawford avenue on the site of the present Bell Telephone Company building. The following January, they sold the business and Mr. Kurtz went to Scottdale where he was given employment in a bank. Two months later he was offered and accepted appointment as a teller in the Yough National Bank here. He remained there in that capacity until 1902 when he was elected a teller by the Title and Trust Company of Western Pennsylvania but before he assumed these duties, he was named cashier of the Union National Bank on the West Side. He remained with the Title and Trust about a month before taking over his work on the West Side, where he remained until 1905. Then he was elected cashier of the Citizens National Bank, continuing in office until 1929. It was in 1924 when Mr. Kurtz became identified with the South Connellsville Building and Loan Association. At that time it was four years of age. He was named secretary and was in that capacity at his death. The name of the concern later was changed to Connellsville Building and Loan Association. Mr. Kurtz was active in his association with the Christian Church for 50 years. During that period he served as superintendent of the Sunday school, teacher of a class of boys, and successively filled the offices of deacon and elder. He was chairman of the official board for nine years and last March was elected for another year. In every phase of the church's life he was devoted and loyal to the church's interests. His cordial, friendly attitude drew the membership to him with a warmth of affection, few have ever experienced. Next to his home life, which was ideal in all its relations, the church filled the largest place in his activities, interests and aspirations. In the early years of the Y.M.C.A. in Connellsville he gave much of his time, as a member of the board of directors, to the promotion and up building of this organization. In the rebuilding of the Christian Church in 1921-22 he was a member of the building committee and contributed many valuable suggestions as to the work which, when completed, provided the congregation with one of the most complete church plants in the city. He had been treasurer of the Salvation Army Board of the city for many years. In his relations to this agency he had been instrumental in making it possible for the Army to continue its work during periods when its resources were on the verge of exhaustion. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for several years, that organization providing him an opportunity to maintain an intimate touch with his fellow citizens from which he derived much pleasure and benefit. He was a friend of the public schools, the Carnegie Library and other institutions he regarded as helpful and vital to the development of our citizenry of tomorrow. In all the duties and obligations as a neighbor and resident of his home town. Mr. Kurtz was diligent and faithful. He had an abiding faith in Connellsville and was constantly concerned in its growth and material, moral and spiritual development of its people. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Emma Katherine Stumbaugh of Latrobe and Mrs. Elizabeth R. Ralston of Indiana; three grandchildren, Jimmy Stumbaugh of Latrobe and Ernest Kurtz Ralston and Elizabeth Grace Ralston of Indiana, and two brothers A.E. Kurtz of West Green street and J. Fred Kurtz of Harrisburg. The body was removed to the Charles C. Mitchell Funeral Home in South Pittsburg street where it was prepared for burial and then removed to the Mitchell Funeral Chapel where it will lie in state until noon Thursday. JOHN KURTZ DIES
AT 88: LIVED IN
CITY ALL HIS LIFE

Member Of Family Long
Identified With Connellsville
Affairs.

SERVED TERM AS BURGESS

Learned Hatter's Trade In His Father's
Factory When A Youth But
Engaged In Mercantile Business
In Later Years; Family Of Fighters.

John Kurtz one of Connellsville's oldest and best known citizens died early this morning at his home at the corner of Pittsburg street and Crawford avenue, following a brief illness which resulted from a fall about two weeks ago. He was 88 years old. Mr. Kurtz suffered a slight stroke following this apparently trivial mishap but was not compelled to take his bed until Wednesday of this week. He was conscious to the last. Mr. Kurtz was born in Connellsville and lived his life here. He came of a distinguished family, one that has been in prominent in civic and business affairs for several generations. He also came from a family of fighters, being one of four brothers, all of whom saw service in the Civil War. He was a brother of William F. Kurtz, who fell at Fredericksburg and in whose honor the local G.A.R. post is named. Three generations of the Kurtz family have served from time to time as burgess of Connellsville, Josiah Kurtz, his father was burgess in 1831. Fifty years later, in 1881, John Kurtz was elected to the position while his son, Josiah B. Kurtz, served as burgess in 1893, 1894, 1896 and from 1900 to 1902. John Kurtz's career as an officeholder was confined to his single term as burgess. His father was first elected to office in 1826, when he was named borough treasurer. He was in the town council in 1833 and again in 1867 and was treasurer in 1874 and 1876. Josiah and Elizabeth Kurtz, parents of John Kurtz, were natives of Somerset, coming to Connellsville about 1825. John Kurtz was their oldest child. He was born in Connellsville, on the site of the Stader building, at the corner of Main street and Meadow lane, on October 7, 1826. There were seven children in this family, four of them are still living. Four of the five sons of Josiah Kurtz served in the Civil War, they were William F. Kurtz, Henry Kurtz, Samuel Kurtz who died about five years ago and John Kurtz. John Kurtz enlisted in 1865 and served for nine months in the Sixth Heavy Artillery. The sisters who are still living are Mrs. Carrie Stillwagon, Miss Ellen Kurtz, and Mrs. Christina Kilpatrick, wife of Worth Kilpatrick. On January 1, 1850, John Kurtz married Miss Catherine Keepers. She died in 1910. Five children were born to this union, Josiah B. Kurtz, of Connellsville, Isaac W. Kurtz of Peru, Ind., Harry L. Kurtz of Pittsburg, Mrs. Elizabeth B. Freed of town, and J. Charles Kurtz, who died a few years ago. John Kurtz is also survived by a single grandchild, Miss Frances K. Freed. Josiah Kurtz was a hat manufacturer and had an extensive business in the early days of the borough. His factory and store occupied what is now the Stader building on Main street. Although John Kurtz learned the hatters trade at an early age, he never followed it to any extent, spending most of his time in the store. He remained in business until about 1900. The hats made by Josiah Kurtz had a wide reputation. They were sold in all parts of the country, boat, and not infrequently shipments were made to Cincinnati and other parts by boat, the Youghiogheny being navigable in those times. In addition to his duties in the store which he conducted, John Kurtz and conveyance. It is said that he probably written more wills than any man in Connellsville. For many years he was practically the only man to whom such matters were taken. He also engaged rather extensively in the realty business.

For the past several years Mr. Kurtz has been in feeble health. He came downtown regularly, however, and was a familiar figure. He invariably wore a high silk hat, which seemed incongruous on to the younger generation. Mr. Kurtz was probably the best known of the older residents of town, and was highly respected by all. Since the death of his wife in 1910 he and his son Josiah B. Kurtz, continued to make their home in the South Pittsburg street residence. This dwelling was erected about 12 years ago, following the sale of the Kurtz property on East Main street to the Elks. They had resided on Main street about 30 years prior to that sale, moving to there from the home in the downtown section. Mr. Kurtz was member of General Worth Encampment. Independent Order of Odd Fellows He had been a member of the Odd Fellows for 40 years and they will have charge of the funeral services, which will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the home. Rev. G.L.C. Richardson, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and Rev. T.H. Pershing, a former pastor, will officiate. Interment will be private in Chestnut Hill cemetery. Mr. Kurtz was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for many years.

Funeral Of J. B. Kurtz Will
Be Held Tuesday Afternoon

The funeral service for Josiah B. Kurtz, former burgess of Connellsville who was found dead Sunday morning at the home of his sister, Mrs. George B. Freed at Pittsburgh street and Lincoln avenue will be held at the Freed home Tuesday at 2 o'clock with Dr. Bennett W. Hutchinson officiating. It will be private to all but friends of Mr. Kurtz. Burial in Hill Grove Cemetery, also will be private. Friends are invited, however, to the service. Mr. Kurtz, one of the best-known and most popular of the city's citizens, was found dead on his bed in his room under circumstances indicating that his death had resulted from a pistol wound which, under the stress of deep despondency and great mental anguish had been self-inflicted. Mr. Kurtz has been unwell for upwards of six months. He is said to have expressed to a friend his fear that he might at some time become a burden or charge on his friends and his horror of the possible fate. Mr. Kurtz was a member of a pioneer family of Connellsville. He was born on the site of the First National Bank Building, March 29, 1852, a son of the late John and Katherine Keepers Kurtz and spent all his life here. He was educated in the public schools and for many years was a member of the firm of H. and J. Kurtz, one of the leading dry goods stores of Connellsville at that time located in the present building of the Connellsville Drug Company. He continued as a member of the firm, until its dissolution a number of years ago. He then retired and succeeded his father whose death occurred in 1914 as notary public, which office he still maintained at the time of his death. Mr. Kurtz, when a young man, enlisted in the old "Connellsville Grays" a volunteer military organization, which was later taken into the National Guard as Co. C, 10th regiment, as a lieutenant in this organization. Mr. Kurtz served in the railroad riot of 1877. The organization later became Company D. He was an organizer of a drums corps known as "Jo Kurtz" Drums Corps, which was always very much in evidence at all celebrations of Republican victories, as well as patriotic demonstrations. In politics Mr. Kurtz was a staunch Republican, always taking part in the activities of the party. He was three times elected burgess of Connellsville, being chosen in 1893, 1894 and in 1900. Mr. Kurtz was reared in the Methodist Episcopal faith, but never united with the church. He never married. He is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Kurtz Freed, wife of George B. Freed Connellsville, two brothers, I.W. Kurtz, Peru, Ind. and Harry L. Kurtz, Pittsburg, and an adopted sister, Mrs. K.L. Cameron of Atlantic City, Mrs. Frances Freed Carroll is the only surviving niece. Mr. Kurtz was known to virtually every man, woman and child in Connellsville and his commission as notary of public and his merchandise business brought him in contact with hundreds of persons: from out of town points by whom he was also admired and respected. Courteous in his manner and processing a jovial disposition. Mr. Kurtz won the friendship and esteem of all with whom he came in contact and many of the older citizens of Connellsville frequently met at his office in Meadow lane for a friendly chat. Many of these visitors, have died. He was especially kind and charitable toward the poor and conducted his office duties with honesty, and showing no partiality. While not able to take care of his duties for some week past on account of ill health, he was at his office on Saturday night and friends with whom he conversed with, he was in his usual spirits. His death comes as a great shock to the entire community.
