MIDDLETOWN BAPTISTS

1864 - First Zion Primative Baptist Church

A few black christians who settled in Royalton and Middletown in the early 1860s organized the first black Baptist Church. Most came from Virginia - a few from North Carolina, Maryland, and York County, Pa. They were former slaves - some "run - aways".

They built a church in Upper Royalton on S. East Penn Street. The church building was dedicated October 22, 1864. For many years the people of the congregation walked from Middletown to Royalton to attend Sunday School, Church services and Prayer meetings. Summer Picnics (according to the oldsters) were held at Geyer's Camp Grounds. As the Royalton negro population died or moved it was deemed wise to move the church building to Middletown. A lot was purchased at the N.W. Corner of Keystone Avenue and Catherine Streets in Middletown. The Royalton church was torn down piece by piece, moved to this lot, and the church rebuilt, mostly by volunteer labor. This church building was dedicated May 20, 1920. Since then, the building has been renovated and an addition added.

There was a cemetery adjoining the Royalton church where quite a few of the early members are still buried (some were moved to the cemetery along Route 230). The old markers and gravestones have been removed and one large granite marker placed there in memory of this small group of courageous people.

This was the first black Baptist Church organized in the area. In all, seven other Primative Baptist Churches have been organized (1976) from the Middletown Mother church.

All members of Zion Primative Baptist Churches are members of the Second National Ketoctan Primative Association, Inc.

- - - - - - - - - A. M. E. ZION CHURCH - 1872 - - - - - - - -

A..M.E. Zion Church was organized in 1872 by mostly settlers who came here as former southern Methodist worshipers. Their house of worship was a small brick structure on south side of Market Street near Wood Street. There was a cemetery lot in rear of the church, which was filled to capacity. Some of the ones buried there were removed to the cemetery along route 230 east of Middletown. Others remain there. The markers have all been destroyed. The church closed in 1925 because of insufficient membership. Most of the remaining members joined Ebenezer A.M.E.

The building has been sold and is used as a dwelling, at 210 Market Street.

Note: A public school for black children was held here before the open policy for all races was adopted in Pennsylvania.

1884 - EBENEZER A.M.E. (AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH)

The A.M.E. congregation in Middletown was organized and a church was built north side of Market Street, near Lincoln Street in 1884. This church was destroyed by fire April 17, 1969. Lots were bought at the N.E. corner of Market and Lincoln Streets and several years later an edifice for worship was was built on these lots.

This church belongs to the African Methodist Episcopal Church Conference. Richard Allen formed the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1816. Sixteen independant Black A.M.E. congregations held a conference in Philadelphia forming a separate body of Methodists. Dr. Allen was elected Bishop. They called their conference "The African Methodist Episcopal Church." They follow the Wesleyan tradition in policies and doctrine. In 1976 there were 5 of these churches in the Harrisburg Area, including one in Middletown. (From "Trails of Faith" by Robert Crist, 1976 and notes from Julius Reeves, a former Pastor of Zion Primative Baptist Church).
