Excerpts from the Evening Star ~ Saturday, January 27, 1945 Receive Word From Brother In Germany Lee Beers of Packerton received a letter from his brother, Cpl. Willard Beers, that he is stationed in Germany with the Army. He is the son of Mrs. Lucy Beers of north 7th street. This is the first communication from Cpl. Beers for quite some time. He wrote and told his family that he felt quite at home for they had three inches of snow the day he wrote the letter. No Protection of Hills For Coasting Tonight Chief of Police Harry T. Yenser announced this morning that no hills or streets in Lehighton or vicinity would be under police protection for coasters tonight. This ruling is due to the heavy traffic on the streets because of the Saturday evening shopping rush. The chief asks parents to warn their children to be careful. Henry Kresge Outfit Get Croix de Guerre Pvt. Henry Kresge of 229 south 3rd street, Lehighton, is a member of the 894th Tank Destroyer Battalion recently awarded the Croix de Guerre avec Stoile de Vermeil in recognition of support fiven French troops fighting on the Italian front. They are credited with having saved the medieval center of culture, Siena, from destruction. The battalion is attached to the Fifth Army in Italy. On the Main Stem Rev. James K. Erma Schmick Dies In Hospital Miss Erma Pearlina Schmick, 34, daughter of Sylvanus and the late Gertrude Hill Schmick of Lehighton R.1., died in the Allentown Hospital Friday after an illness of the past five years. Born in Middleport, she lived there until about eight years ago. she was an accomplished musician and a member of a family of noted musicians. She is survived by these sisters and brothers: Oscar L. of Allentown; Harold C. of Lehighton R.1; Myrtle, wife of Marvin Burgett of Lehighton; Mildred, wife of Harvey Lick, of Sumneytown, Montgomery county; Genevieve, wife of Pvt. Franklin Smith in England; Elwood of Union Hill; Jill, Weissport; nevin, somewhere in Belgium; Loretta, wife of Freeman Gable, Lehighton. The funeral, which will be strictly private, will be held from the Robert W. Wink Funeral Home or Bridge street, Weissport, with interment in the West Penn Cemetery near Snyders.
