Birth Records

1893-1905

The records you find here are the complete Birth Records for Butler County, PA, which the State mandated be kept in the County Courthouse from 1893 through 1905.  Starting in January of 1906, the State Office of Vital Records began keeping all Birth and Death records for the State.

The Butler County Courthouse has a typewritten copy of the original records that was done way before the age of computers, White Out, and proofreading.  We have done our best to reproduce those typewritten records here as they are in the Courthouse.  While they are listed chronologically at the courthouse, we have also chosen to include an alphabetized list for your convenience.  One large problem that we’ve seen with these records involves the Date of Birth in conjunction with the Date of Record.  We don’t know if this happened when the records were typed or if the original records were also done wrong.  You will find many entries where a birth occurred [Example: Oct 31, 1898 and was recorded May 17, 1898.] Since the births were recorded chronologically, we feel that the Date of Birth years are not in error, but the Date of Record years are.  There also are many entries that include notations of changes made to the typed records.  Upon an investigation into these notations, I found out that well-meaning people who were looking through these records made many of these changes.  And unfortunately, some of the original typing is illegible due to this.  The Office Personnel who found mistakes while typing made some of the changes too.  You will see many entries that have the words “Court Order” in the Comments field. These people went to the court to have their original birth record corrected.  A lot of these corrections were on entries where the child's first name was not given at the time the original birth record was recorded or the given name was incorrect.  Sometimes it was a misspelling of the surname in the original record.  Most of these corrections were done in the 1940’s and into the 1960’s when people needed their birth record to get a Social Security Number.  Although we have diligently proofread these entries, no claim is being made here as to these records being totally complete or accurate.
