Mabry, James W.

Rev. James W. Mabry, of Curryville, one of the best known ministers of the Reformed denomination, died Wednesday night of consumption, aged about 45 years. He had been ill for about a year or so. He preached for the last time about five months ago, shortly after he became so weak that he took to bed, from which he never rose. His death from consumption is a surprise, as he was always the very picture of health. The deceased was born in Longswamp, Berks county, and was a son of the late Willoughby Mabry, whose wife was a Ziegler. He early evinced a desire to enter the ministry, and with that end in view he entered Ursinus College, where he graduated in 1879. He was examined and licensed as a minister of the Reformed Church at a meeting of the East Pennsylvania Classis held at Lehighton in the same year. A year later, Lehigh Classis was formed from a part of the East Pennsylvania Classis and he became a member of the former body. Shortly after being licensed, he was called to the pastorate of St. Paul's Reformed Church, at Cherryville, and the Stone Church, at Kreidersville, which congregations he served for the past twenty years. At one time he also served a congregation at Friedensville and one at Siegfried's, but these must have been for only a limited time. Rev. Mabry is survived by his wife, nee Stem, and one daughter, a student in the Allentown College for Women, this city. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. Jane Schwartz, of Hancock; Mrs. John Fegely, of Shamrock; Mrs. Campbell Hertzog, of Longswamp; Levi Mabry, of Mertztown, and Sylvester Mabry, of Longswamp. As a preacher he was devoted to the ministry of Christ and was a conscientious, hard working, upright man, and the greatest tribute that can be paid to his life and work is found in the unswerving love and fidelity of the congregations he served so long and faithfully.

McNabb, James

James McNabb, a resident of Maxatawny township, near the line separating Lehigh from Berks, died very suddenly one morning recently. He was an employee in Merkle's iron mine, and had for years been a sufferer under epilepsy in its worst form. His falls into what are commonly termed “falling fits” were of frequent occurrence, he thereby very frequently sustaining injuries of the severest kind. Like all victims of this disease he would always drop forward on his face, several times narrowly escaping death from suffocation. On two or three occasions he fell forward on red hot stoves and, as a result of all these occurrences, his face was badly disfigured. For some time past he had been an employee in the above named mine as a cart driver. On the morning stated he had belated himself somewhat, all the other drivers having already taken their horses out of the stables, and in order to catch up wit them he greatly hurried himself in putting the gearing, &c., upon his animal. The excitement incident to this brought into play his besetting ailment, and he as usual dropped forward upon his face in an unconscious state. The fit was one of a very severe character, and he in a very short time expired under it — life being entirely extinct when found shortly after. Dr. Reichard, one of the Justices of the township, was summoned to hold an inquest, and empaneling James Gross, Albert Merkle, Charles Bortz, Frank Hartman and Griffith Erdell, as jurors, he proceeded to investigate the manner of death, &c., and which resulted in the presentation of a verdict to the effect that the deceased had died from natural causes. Deceased was about 20 years of age. He was a young man generally esteemed, and enjoyed the friendship of all knowing him. His funeral took place at the Mertztown Church, Rev. B. E. Kramlich officiating.
