Funeral of Mrs. Esther Kercher

The funeral of Mrs. Esther Kercher was held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elisa Kern. The body was clothed in a black robe and reposed in a black cloth covered casket with silver mountings and a plate on the lid inscribed "At Rest." Rev. G.B. Smith, of Kutztown, officiated. Services were held in St. Peter's church. Interment took place at DeLong's church, Bower's Station. Bearers: J.G. Miller, C.D. Trexler, Frank Wean and Samuel Gambler. People from Phila., Reading, Allentown, Pennsburg, Kutztown and other places attended. T. DeLong, undertaker.

Mrs. Chas. Brile, Mrs. Christiana Willard of Terre-Haute, Ind., and Mrs. Susan Alverson and Mrs. Alonzo Moffett, of Elwood, Ind., visited Michael H. Miller and wife. The ladies are descendants of the late Charles Newmoyer, originally from Longswamp, and this is their first visit east in 20 years.

Mrs. Catharine Baer and daughter, Carried, of Pottstown, are visiting the former's son, B. Frank Baer and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Wm. O. McGargy, of Kutztown, are spending a week with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Peter.

Misses Carrie Grim and Sallie Merkel visited Dorney's Park and Rittersville.

Misses Stella and Ruth Moyer, of Reading, visited their cousin, Miss Stella Fisher.

Howard Stiler and Miss Ida Sittler, of Reading, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. John Dierolf, of the American House.

Mrs. John Ressler, sr., and Mrs. Amos Butz and Mrs. John Scheirer, of Kutztown, were guests of J.B. Peter and family.

Mrs. Caroline Haas and Miss Katie E. Trexler were in Kutztown.

An amateur bicycle race, open and free to all, will take place on Saturday, September 8, 15 4 p.m. Prizes: First, gold watch; 2d, arc light gas lamp; 3d Veeder cyclometer. The course will be from the American House to Hancock and return by way of Oreville and Ringtown, a distance of about 3 miles.

Mrs. A.H. Keck and children of Reading were guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Keck.

Birdsboro

Sept. 6. Mrs. Rebecca Grubb is putting sandstone curbing in at her property on Bird st., South Birdsboro, and will lay a pavement. Emanuel Grubb and sons are doing the work. It is likely that other owners of property on this street will follow her example.

On Friday evening the Luther League of St. Mark's Lutheran church will hold a sociable in the church. The pastor of the church, Rev. Z.H. Gable, will make an address and Rev. Mr. Kistler, pastor of Amityville church and several Reading clergymen are also expected to add to the pleasure of the occasion. The organization has been in existence only about a year, but has grown rapidly in membership and has been of great help in the general work of the church.

Improvements are being made to Grace United Brethren church, a new fence being erected to enclose the lot and the exterior woodwork of the edifice is being painted.
