Benjamin Turpin7 MILLER (Amanda Belle6 RIEGEL, Johann George W.5, Anna Maria4 LESHER, Johannes3 LOSCHER, Jr., Johannes2, Jacob1) was born 30-March-1876 in Darke Co. Ohio, and died 05-July-1966 in Darke Co. Ohio. He married Mary E. Straight 12-February-1898 in Ft. Jefferson, Darke Co. Ohio. She was born 01-January-1875 in Indiana, and died 17-October-1967 in Palestine, Darke Co. Ohio.

Notes for Benjamin Turpin MILLER:

A short story of the life of two elderly people, Mr. and Mrs. Ben T. Miller. They hereby express their gratitude for the privilege of living in the United States of America for so many years and being a part of it.

Mr. Miller's life started in 1876 and Mrs. Miller's, who was Miss Mary E. Straight started in 1875. Miss Straight lived in New Madison, Ohio, and received her education there. In 1896, she visited relatives in Lightsville, Ohio and chanced to meet Mr. Miller for the first time. She and Mr. Miller enjoyed a very pleasant courtship and on February 12th, 1898, they started their married life together in Lightsville. Mr. Miller was holding down a steady job, averaging 16 hours per day, 6 days per week, for an average wage of $9.00 per week.

For 6 long trying years to live and save some money with no avail, they decided to change their vocation to farming. They rented a farm and for the next 3 years were very successful, finishing up with some profit. Then they started thinking of expanding their operation so they rented a 160 acre farm upon which they raised 10 acres of tobacco each year for 6 long years. Feeling they were on the road to prosperity, Mrs. Miller's health suddenly became impaired. At this point they decided to move into town so Mrs. Miller could recuperate better. They moved to Palestine, Ohio, where, Mr.. Miller started a business selling agricultural implements. He followed that line very successfully until the tractor came into vogue. Records of that time show that Mr. Miller sold the first three tractors in the county. Mr. Miller decided that he was not a tractor mechanic, so he side stepped that business and devoted his time to general contract ing doing galvanized metal roofing, spouting, heating and plumb ing. This was very successful so they secured a very comfort able home where they raised a family of three daughters until they married and started a life of their own.

On February 12, 1948, they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with a public dance in the K of P Hall in Palestine and an open house at their residence on the following Sunday. In just a few days after, they started on a three week tour of Florida where they bought a cottage for their winter home. After spending a few winters in Leesburg, Florida, Mrs. Miller found the trip was too much for her so they sold the cottage and returned to Palestine.

In 1961, Mr. Miller decided they had worked hard enough, long enough and had secured enough lifes earnings to protect them through the remainder of their journey. They have lived 5 years since that time and are still going strong.

In the first three months of 1966 they enjoyed the three most important events of their entire married life.

Number One: The celebration of Mrs. Miller's 91st birthday, on January 16th.

Number Two: Mr. and Mrs. Miller celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary, February 12, 1966.

Number Three: Mr. Miller celebrated his 90th birthday, March 30th. - All in 1966.

Now, Mr. and Mrs. Miller have compiled this story of the history of their married life along with the 68th anniversary picture and the flower of their birthdays and are passing along a copy to each of their children, grand - children, great grand - children and great great grand - children which numbers 31. We do sincerely hope that it will be received in the same spirit that it is given and hope that it will remain in their possession so long as life lasts, to remember their giver. When Gabriel sounds his trumpet for the last round - up they shall all- meet on the other side of the river and clasp hands on that sacred spot where parting shall be no more.

Mr. and Mrs. Ben T. Miller
