Lehigh County History

Among the pioneer families of PA were the Erbs. The ancestor, John Casper Erb, a German by birth, settled in Douglas township, Montgomery Co, before the close of the first half of the eighteenth century, Among his children were two sons, Johan George an Heinrich Erb.

Jonas Erb, probably a grandson of the ancestor was a farmer and a cabinetmaker in Montgomery Co. His wife died young, Children; Edward, John, who lived near Pennsburg, Susan married Benjamin Moyer, and Rebecca married John Strunk

Edward Erb. son Jonas, and the father of Henry E., of Allentown, was born 1827, in Montgomery Co. There Edward Erb followed the trade of a shoemaker and also of a stone mason. He died Oct. 1910 age 73.

Henry Miller Erb, of Allentown, was born near Sassamanville, Montgomery County Sept 22, 1861 s/o Edward and Susan (Miller) Erb. On Oct 1, 1885 he married Elemina Schneider, d/o Philip. Children; Ella, Agnes, Carrie, Mamie, Charles, Edwin P., and Millie. Of the above children, Ella, Carrie and Mamie died in 1891, from scarlet fever, as died Willie Aichroth, a half brother, and John M. Schneider, a brother of Mrs. Erb.

Mrs. Erb had first been married to Lewis W. Aichroth, and they had two children, namely Anna and Willie.

Rev. J. S. Erb, pastor of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Slatington. He was born in Montgomery Co, Sept 16, 1847. He was the son of David Erb, also a native of Montgomery Co, where he died June 25, 1881 in his 76th year.

Oct 17 1876 Rev. J. S. married Anzonett Leh, a native of Catasauqua, d/o Reuben. Her mother prior to her marriage was Catharine Berlin, and was born in Northampton Co. Children of Rev. J. S. were Frederick Luther, Edmund Melanchton and Helen Leh.

Erb, Horace B. (M.D) of Steinsville, a native of Montgomery Co, born April 28, 1859, son of Israel M. and Rachel (Bleim) Erb, natives of Montgomery Co.

Nov 23 1888 Horace B., married Amanda Sweisford. a native of Montgomery Co, d/o josiah and Maria (Geiger) Sweisford . Mrs Erb died April 28, 1890.

Erb, Hiram L. of Clay township. Jacob Erb,great-great-grandfather, from Switzerland to America in 1728. He was 4 years old at the time. His wife Miss Johns; children; two sons and several daughters. Of the sons, John is mentioned below and Christian of Warwick township.

John Erb, Rev. War Soldier. Married Judith Hull. Children; Jacob, John, David, Isaac, Samuel, Joseph, Molly who married Abraham Erb and moved to Canada, Elizabeth married Michael Shepler, Nancy marrried Abraham Bear, and Catharine married Joseph Weidman.

John Erb was born Nov 3, 1786, he married Barbara Bergelbach. Children; Hiram, John B., Henry B., Priscilla Cecilia, married George W. Steinmetz. John Erb died in 1862.

Hiram E., son of John and father of Hirman L., married May 16, 1839 married Catharine Lane, widow of John S. Bear. One child, Hirman L.. Catharine Lane Erb, died 1866 age 76. Hiram Erb died in 1892 age 82.

Hirman L. was born Nov 24, 1840, died Jan 27, 1900. Married on Nov 24 1863 he married Celinda Becker, d/o William and Lucy (Spayd) Becker of Mill Creek/

William Becker, son of George, was born 1816 and died Oct 29, 1879, married Lucy Spayd

Erb, Israel G. was born Sept 12, 1843, s/o David and Catharine (Groff) Erb.(married in 1840)
