THOMPSON, John S.

Postmaster of Reading; born in Jonestown, Lebanon County, Pa., Feb. 15, 1857; attended the public schools until his fourteenth year, when he removed with his parents to Reading; attended the Reading Business College and Reading Classical Academy; became a collector of the Union Canal Company, retaining this position until 1872; then became connected with the Bushong Paper Company, remaining with this company four years. Subsequently he was in business with his father-in-law. On Oct. 1, 1886, was appointed a clerk in the Reading Post office, and later became Assistant Postmaster, retaining this office until March 21, 1891, when he retired, owing to a change of administration; was cashier of the Reading Fire Insurance Company for two years, when, on March 23, 1895, he became Postmaster of Reading, having been appointed as a Democrat by President Cleveland. Mr. Thompson has served in the School Board and in Common Council. Was the Democratic candidate for City Treasurer in 1893, but was defeated by Dr. John M. Bertolette by ninety-six votes. At present he is Trust Officer of the Colonial Trust Company of Reading. Married, March 9, 1878, Miss Sallie A. Rader. Address, Reading, Pa. (pp. 740-741)

TRYON, John S.

Physician; born in Rehrersburg, Pa., May 12, 1835; second son of Dr. Jacob Tryon and grandson of Dr. Michael Tryon, one of the pioneer physicians of Berks County; educated in the common schools and at Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg; studied medicine with his father, and was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in the class of 1857. He commenced the practice of medicine in his native town, where he still resides and is in active practice. Like his father and grandfather, Dr. Tryon has excelled in surgery and has had a number of students. Address, Rehrersburg, Pa. (pp. 749-750)
