Libraries -
Hillman Library has many books, film, and archival
materials which are helpful. In the Special Collections on the third
floor, there are many documents, and records such as for the schools;
for Allegheny City (tax records, etc.); business records for industrial
Pittsburgh; jail and coroner records (restricted); and an especialy fine
collection of ethnic newspaper, church and fraternal order records. Some
of these are restricted and permission must be given before they can be
researched. The Microfilm Section of the Library has World War I Draft
records, many census films, old newspapers (worldwide) and other
materials. A microfilming project in cooperation with the Western
Pennsylvania Genealogical Society is adding many reels of microfilmed
church records to this collection. Consult the librarian for indexing
and cataloging. Darlington Library is a small library in the Cathedral of Learning is open only by appointment at this time. This is a private collection donated to the University. The focus of the collection is early American history. It contains many rare books, helpful in establishing background data and often in research on early families of the Colonial and Early American periods.
